What the club says: Theale Golf Course, designed and constructed by owner Mike Lowe, was founded in 1996. Set in 150 acres in the Berkshire countryside, this 18 hole golf course offers an interesting and enjoyable game for golfers of all abilities.

Although gently undulating, this parkland course is deceptively challenging. Holes varying in length from 154 yards to 519 yards (off the yellow tees), and numerous hazards in between ensures a game at Theale Golf Club remains interesting throughout.

The doglegs demand precise drives (such as the 14th – if you clear the water hazard you may be in with a birdie chance) and par 3’s guarded by water or sand traps (such as 6th and 13th respectively) form quality tests of golf.

Water is featured on nine holes and approximately 60 bunkers of varying shapes and sizes ensure your skills continually are tested.

The elevated tees on the 11th (yellow and white tee) provide an enjoyable vista over the attractive course.

Excellent drainage makes provides good year round playability.

Temporary tees and greens are rarely used.

With the 9th and 18th both finishing close to the clubhouse, you can enjoy a short stroll to our friendly bar for a refuel or a relaxing wind down.

Whilst there is non pro shop, small golf accessories are available for purchase in the clubhouse.

The patio provides an enjoyable setting with views across the course.

Little Gem

Great tricky course makes you think about your game, has a bit of everything, tight dog legs, water , hidden holes, would of helped a bit if I had played it before, not much sand in bunkers, the course is well worth playing.

Interesting course

Interesting course with plenty of ditches and water hazards to catch any errant shots. Par 3's also more challenging than normal and require both distance and accuracy!

Nice steady round

Given the time of year the course was in decent condition. Very welcoming and lovely club house and bar, good service. Greens varied on the round which is understandable given how wet it has been. Very flat and steady course. looks like lots of work is currently being done so will be great to see what it looks like this summer.

Nice flat course

Course is well maintained with plenty of trees and water hazards, greens in good condition. Holes 11 & 12 are quite close to the M4 motorway. Club house is comfortable if a little tired.

There are some large areas of ground under repair

Fantastic Course

Very underestimated golf course which has had extensive work completed on it over the last couple of years resulting in championship standard fairways to what has always been a challenging course.
Staff always make you feel welcome and never out of place no matter what handicap you are.

Worth a look

I've played this course many times now and for me it's everything I need. I play off 27 so this course can be quite challenging, the ground staff are always changing, updating the course. A well groomed course, my only gripe would be the tee boxes could be more level, flat.

Nice course with just a few really super holes

Played with a couple of work buddies who are members which brought the green fee down to £27 which was a fair price. The condition of the course was great, nice lush fairways and the greens were very nice....quite fluffy grass which I'm used to and the greenkeepers do not shave the hole so the grass overgrows which makes the hole appear smaller - so a clever technique :-)

Some holes were nice/fairly ordinary/wide fairways so single figure players can tear it up I feel. But the good holes here really made up for anything ordinary about the others. The par 3 6th over a hidden stream (dont be short) followed by the real risk/reward 7th are some of the best of the front 9. I really liked the 11th. A real strategic drive from an elevated tee and approach needed to an amazing green (the only one I 3 putted) with danger off the right of the green with a pond. This is a super hole and really reminded me of the Forest of Arden in Warwickshire and the walk to the green to the left is like the lovely heathland views at Formby ladies course on Merseyside. Then green on the short 12th is amazing with a bunker right in the middle. How often do you find the green with an approach only to get your wedge out to chip a bunker to get to the flag on the other side of the green?? One of the best greens I've seen!

This is not a long course, nor is it a boomer's course - it is a thinking course. I enjoyed it. I'd recommend it if in the area as they have nice friendly staff too and a small, cute/friendly club house (+ good short game practice facilities too!), and just 5 mins off the M4.

I hear the £900 membership is one of the best value in the area esp with Reading GC being closed at the moment.

Not worth ?36

I think some of the previous negative comments are slightly harsh... dependant on time of year (autumn) you have to let the grass grow and sometimes the fairways and first cut can be difficult to identify.
I played yesterday (midweek April spring day) and the fairways were mown and greens too. The bunkers had decent amount of sand, and on the whole, the course is in fair/good condition.
Off the fairway and into the rough, things are unkept and tatty, and signage is poor, especially between 9 &10...
I personally feel ?36 (midweek rate) is a bit steep, considering other courses offer better quality for similar/less money.

Lovely course, friendly welcome

The driveway into the club is unprepossessing, but don't be fooled - this is a lovely course, with a very friendly welcome in the clubhouse. Fairways were reasonably forgiving/wide and quite dry, allowing the ball to run. Greens were consistent speed despite slightly mottled appearance and the odd bare patch. I found a couple of bits of water that I couldn't see from the tee, and most holes provide challenge without being impossible to play. Would definitely play again, played well under my handicap!

Theale has come along incredibly well over the last few years the green keepers have done an excellent job with the greens and clearing away lots of old bushes and over grown rough areas. This has helped to speed up play and allow air to circulate around the course more and also give more visibility. If you haven’t played there recently I would recommend another visit
