Stinchcombe Hill is a lovely course I reviewed it last in December 2015 at pretty much what I said then still stands. This course has near perfect greens even on par3s and views to die for and generous fairways (yet I still failed to find them half the time).
This course has a few tricky bunkers but the general topography is actually pretty flat. The main challenge comes from the length of the par4s, which are pretty long. I think most people will be hitting into the green using a mid iron rather than a wedge. If you duff your tee shot you’re going to struggle to be on the green in 2 shots unless you’re dynamite with a 3 wood.. For some reason I personally struggle on the par3s on this course which tend to have plenty of bunkers guarding the green.
If you live locally or visiting this is well worth a knock.

Stinchcombe Hill golf course is a wonderful place to have a round of golf. It mainly consists of par 4 holes (5x par 3, 1x par5) but very few of these par4s are reachable in one shot and you will have a variety of approach shots. Perhaps the only thing which lets this course down is too few par 5 holes (which I happen to enjoy easiest birdie opportunity).
Even thought the course is on a hill, it is actually quite easy to walk, as it is fairly flat at the top (compared other “local” courses like Shortwood lodge, Woodlands and of course Painswick). However the greens are firm, raised and heavily guarded by bunkers which are well raked and filled with top quality course sand (they were actually a pleasure to play out of). The course had brilliant 150yard marker stakes on both sides of the fairway which make choosing your second shot to the green much easier than of you have to guess your yardage. The course also had frequent ball cleaners which is always nice to see. The rough had been recently cut back which made the course very open and forgiving, I would imagine this course would be much more challenging in the summer months if that rough is allowed to grow.
Although I said that this course is fairly flat (considering it location), this course is on top of an amazing hill which enables the golfer (and walkers) to see down the throat of the Severn estuary. It is possible to see Thornbury, Oldbury, both Severn Bridges, Gloucester and beautiful Wales.
I look forward to playing this course again this winter but will probably play it less when summer green fee are re introduced in March or April as I am a budget golfer.
