What the club says: The Heron Golf Club lies mainly facing south and basks in the southern sunshine. The panoramic views over the Thames Valley and into Kent are truly magnificent. The three courses, Hawk, Heron and Vixen have been designed with spaciousness and nature in mind and have been blended into the established gently rolling landscape. Varying the mix of course can give some interesting combinations. Every hole is completely different offering its own individual beauty, interest and challenge.

Excellent
Played this course many times over the years & each time gets better, ground staff doing a grand job & making improvements to the course, all for the better. Course in excellent condition seeing dry spell of late Hawk course was closed for the greens to be topped dressed, so had to play vixen & heron, hadn't played vixen for a few years but was pleasantly surprised how good it was. Improvements to clubhouse with an additional terrace bar also excellent with good food & friendly staff, always a pleasure to come back, am definitely thinking of joining when I retireReviewer Rating

Wide & expansive fairways & non distinctive holes that blended into one another. Rock hard fairways with plenty of roll. Slightly surprisingly greens were on the slow side & the breaks were far more gentle than they looked. Some nice views but didn’t really grab the imagination

Nice track, just drying out.
Really enjoyed our round. Fairways are generous and the greens are pretty good.Course is clearly recovering from some serious wet conditions. Greens fairly recently tined and sanded. Give it a few weeks and it'll be very good.

Worth a visit
Course in very good condition. Although some fairways a bit soggy in places the greens in very good condition. Bunkers also very well maintained. Some tees playing off mats but even these were in good condition - your tees could be used without difficulty.Reviewer Rating

Great staff, very obliging. The course seems to have had a lot of money spent on it and it is still continuing. They are now improving drainage throughout the Heron and Hawk courses. Buggy?s are used all year round as the path goes throughout the course. One problem is that the card and Golfshake stroke index?s don't math on the 2nd Vixen and the 14th on the Heron course.Reviewer Rating

Slow play
4 groups all started off ut the group in from of is (2) lost 4 holes and we played 9 holes 2,5hrs the guys behind us complained and the course pro came out on a buggy back 9 was quickerReviewer Rating

Our group of friends are regular visitors to this club, it's got better over the last couple of years, clubhouse & outside bar great as is the food, service & staff.
The course has got better too with lovely fairways, greens & tee boxes, good value at ?40 Mon- Thursday well worth a visit

Nice looking venue on arrival a bit of a country club like setting can't remember ever playing the course as it had 2 previous names in the past it is fairly open with some water hazards and the greens was running well.

Backat The Heron
The Chooseday Nomads - Eight of us descended on a miserable July day to return to formerly South Essex now The Heron Club. Playing the fantastic Heron and Hawk courses. Course was in vg condition and the greens were quick despite the deluge of rain. It was a tad expensive for mid-week at £32.50 but that's because we are used to paying around £25ish.Bacon rolls were ok but again a tad expensive as well as the coffee prices
Overall very enjoyable despite the rain and all golfers said they would return .

Nice people boring golf
This is quite a long sloggy course.Not very pretty and the bunkers were dreadful.
The greens were not consistent.
If you like big open and long fairways this is for you.

Big changes since our last visit

Renamed Heron from South Essex, 3 9 holes courses Heron, Hawk, Vixen, we played Heron/Hawk. Course was wet but still in wonderful condition, must give credit to ground staff. This club has transformed since being taken back by original owners who have invested a lot of money & it shows. All staff friendly & food great, had a really enjoyable round with brilliant facilities

Interesting course with a variety of holes - Much work has been carried out over the last 18 months and bit by bit the management are turning this into a great course. Bunkers have been improved massively, and some areas have been cleared of scrub without diminishing the challenge. Greens are up there with some of the best around for pace and trueness. Staff are really friendly and unlike a few courses in the area- the members are friendly too!

The Heron golf club
Formally South Essex, I haven’t played this course for quit a whilst and the facilities have changed a lot for the better and they have have done a grand job. The course was in very good condition in July the greens were superb which I have never seen them as fast and they run true.I did think the green fee price was a bit steep though.

too wet to be playable
played late on a saturday. nice enough course, open, greens in good condition, but everywhere other than greens very wet - ground was waterlogged most of the way round, a lot of unplayable lies. Course shouldn't have been open, or at least heavily discounted on green fees/warned when booking. Wet
Played here years ago and never seen course so wet... I believe it shouldn't have been open. However when dry it is a fantastic course with some of best greens in the area. Even on a wet course the greens were still rapid.Reviewer Rating
