What the club says: The course, opened in 1920, boasts lush fairways surrounded by woodland, well-drained soil and subtly undulating greens. Individual challenging holes gently wind through the ancient woods dating back to the 13th Century. As you play the final hole of the 6512-yard course, the magnificence of the Palladian Thorndon Hall, site of the old clubhouse, comes into view.

Thorndon Park
Played in Essex seniors Match against Thorndon Park. Unseasonally dry weather meant we had pick and place on patchy fairways . Bunkers ,Tee boxes and greens were outstanding . The feeling was that this club and its members really care about Thorndon and it was a privilege to play the course.Reviewer Rating

Served a lovely breakfast by friendly staff off to the pro shop welcomed by very helpful staff
The course layout is fantastic and was in good condition after a fair bit of rain I believe the course is over 100 years old what a great experience to play on we will definitely be going back the price was £95 each which might put a few off but you get what you pay for I suppose ????

Rough!
Ridiculous rough, not visitor friendly (no signs to show where next tee is), groundsmen strimming next to the green you are putting on and visitors have to park on rough ground, as members have the tarmac. Greens are super fast.Reviewer Rating

Thorndon Park
I played this course in a match play knock out competition at the end of May, everyone was very helpful including my competitor, the course was in outstanding condition with a superb lay out. This club as an old school feel about the place but I found it refreshing. Essex golf courses are not the best but this had a Surrey feel to it. I look forward to be able to play it again. Note as it was a competition I did not play a green fee but I would pay more than the average price to play it.Reviewer Rating

Faultless
Visited for the first time on a society. Every meal we had was top notch ! The staff in every department were eager to please . Despite heavy rain for weeks, the course played fantastically well, greens ran true, fairways still firm. Very picturesque and some holes were seriously tough. Definitely be visiting again. Worth the visit
This is a member only course and the visitor price is reflected in this - ?50 with county card, so not the cheapest deal. The course does live up to the billing and is well looked after with lovely greens in particular. The catering and service was very good and there was plenty of space on the patio given the requirement for social distancing. A well organised course with a fair challenge to please all golfers.Reviewer Rating

Excellent course
Thorndon is a lovely course in a beautiful setting with no disappointing holes, and surely the best course in Essex. The fairways have taken a beating over the dry summer and preferred lies would not have been inappropriate on some. The greens were good. Played during COVID restrictions, the clubhouse was OOB and an interview meeting closed the drinks service by the time we got in.Reviewer Rating

The golfers????????
Played this course during the development stage last year and it was abysmal, however a group of three of us returned this year to play again, the course is in good condition and the layout good though I wouldn’t say it’s worth the money they charge compared to other also good courses in the area, the club house is the joke of the place, the decor looks like it hasn’t changed from the seventies, and for three guys that run their own businesses that like to meet up and play golf we were told no mobile phones or electronic devices in the club house, only on the golf course, (but also please avoid slow play at all times would be on a sign somewhere I would imagine!) anyway my review would be good course massively over charged, with an out of date clubhouse with no atmosphere and wouldn’t returnReviewer Rating

The once great course
I had been wanting to play Thorndon Park golf club for a number of years and after having recently played it I wish I hadn't bothered, the greens were abysmal, the fairways atrocious and they are carrying out major works on the course. probably the most over rated course I have ever played and whoever does these course ratings you see in some of the magazines etc. obviously aren't playing them.(Round played: Aug 2018 - Score: 89 Handicap: 13.4)
