What The Club Says

This 6,581 yard, par 72 championship course was designed by Commander John Harris, one of Britain's best known course architects and completed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas. The rolling nature of the landscape makes idyllic golf terrain. Peppered with mature trees, natural springs and several lakes which add to the visual pleasure of playing the course. Having been sympathetically designed for the less proficient golfer, this magnificent course still affords the better player a real challenge.

Challenging course but fun to play once you get to know it

This was the second time I had played the course. The first time it was very firm, patchy fairways and rock hard greens. Conditioning was much better this time although a few of the fairways were a bit patchy. The tees and green were spectacular however. For a "stay and play" course, where a lot of the golfers may not care much about replacing divots or repairing pitch marks, the condition was really good, the greens were some of the best I have played all year: firm, fast (but not silly) and true.
The layout is very interesting, challenged by elevation changes, doglegs and many water hazards. You need to play it strategically, it is not a course where you always reach for driver. I enjoyed it much more realising that on the second time of playing. If they could sort the patchy fairways, it would be a first-class course.

Exceptional Course with Great Viwes

A varied challenge, shots out of position being punished. Sloping fast greens failing to stop within 2 feet of the hole means a likely three putt. Very well maintained and run. Hotel and leisure facilities good. We stayed on a three game two night package and were impressed by our experience except the drinks prices!
Very hilly buggy definitely a good idea but currently £50, only adverse comment buggy paths are narrow and quite potholed in places.

Unbelievable course conditions

The greens keepers have carried out an amazing job to get the faitmrways and green in such outstanding condition, they have a buggy path running around the entire course, so no buggies are aloud on the fairways, hence the fairways are like carpet and not chewed up due to buggies, superb course, great staff on course and in the pro shop, can''t wait to return and play again

Great layout

Greens have just had some work, they are sandy but running really well. Fairways and tee boxes were in good condition. We really enjoyed playing the course and the starter was welcoming, polite and light hearted. The only drawback was that he rushed our second group prematurely. They weren't caught by the group behind them.
Considering the amount of rain over Feb and early March, the course held up well.

We were left confused by the iron only driving range (max 180 yards).

Challenging course

Challenging in windy conditions and not much run. Very interesting course with much variety between the holes. Greens in particular good condition.
Also had an active marshall who requested that our 4 ball play through a slower one in front, don't normally get that.

Ridiculous

Old thorns is a track I've been to several times, and they simply just will not learn! There is 200% too much traffic that goes through that course, which is all very well if you actually are going to maintain the course, but they don't. Green keeper has never played golf ever, because the pin positions are a joke!

Interesting and very challenging - greens were impossible

I have wanted to play Old Thorns for some time and I was left pretty battered and bruised. For a mainly pay and play resort course, it is exceptionally difficult, and I am a single figure player. The challenge wasn't helped by the burnt out fairways that were rock hard meaning the ball ran and ran. If it was lush parkland, as I suspect it was intended to be when designed, it would be much more playable. It is a very good collection of holes, mixing a real variety of lengths and looks with some very good placement of water. The major challenge was the greens. They were very, very quick and very sloping to the point where if you were above the hole, getting the ball within 10 feet was a good put. For greens so severe, they really need to be slower or else it becomes comical.
I would very much like to play here again now knowing the course and perhaps when it is green and lush (if it ever gets that way again) and also when the greens are slower.

What has happened to old thorns?!

Golf course in very poor condition, tee boxes poor, barely a blade of grass on the fairways and the greens have tram lines giving you 0% confidence.
Huge disappointment as last time I visited here was exceptional.
Rooms great, I don’t go on a golf break for the food, acceptable to me but the majority of the group unhappy.
Staff superb, go above and beyond, fair play for putting up with whinging golfers.
Beer prices, hmm, seen better, seen worse

Just come back from a 2 night stay for 9.
All of us thoughly enjoyed the stay. Breakfast and dinner was good but disappointing that you could only have starter or dessert with main meal plus most main meals you had no vegetables or potatoes. Bar was well stocked but no real ale so half of the group visited the pub which was situated a 10 min walk away.
Golf course was decent and in good condition and lots of interesting holes. Not too long either.

Good range of holes and course in decent nick although greens had been recently tined and so not great.
