What the club says: This 6,581 yard, par 72 championship course was designed by Commander John Harris, one of Britain's best known course architects and completed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas. The rolling nature of the landscape makes idyllic golf terrain. Peppered with mature trees, natural springs and several lakes which add to the visual pleasure of playing the course. Having been sympathetically designed for the less proficient golfer, this magnificent course still affords the better player a real challenge.

Ridiculous
Old thorns is a track I've been to several times, and they simply just will not learn! There is 200% too much traffic that goes through that course, which is all very well if you actually are going to maintain the course, but they don't. Green keeper has never played golf ever, because the pin positions are a joke!Reviewer Rating

Interesting and very challenging - greens were impossible
I have wanted to play Old Thorns for some time and I was left pretty battered and bruised. For a mainly pay and play resort course, it is exceptionally difficult, and I am a single figure player. The challenge wasn't helped by the burnt out fairways that were rock hard meaning the ball ran and ran. If it was lush parkland, as I suspect it was intended to be when designed, it would be much more playable. It is a very good collection of holes, mixing a real variety of lengths and looks with some very good placement of water. The major challenge was the greens. They were very, very quick and very sloping to the point where if you were above the hole, getting the ball within 10 feet was a good put. For greens so severe, they really need to be slower or else it becomes comical.I would very much like to play here again now knowing the course and perhaps when it is green and lush (if it ever gets that way again) and also when the greens are slower.

What has happened to old thorns?!
Golf course in very poor condition, tee boxes poor, barely a blade of grass on the fairways and the greens have tram lines giving you 0% confidence.Huge disappointment as last time I visited here was exceptional.
Rooms great, I don’t go on a golf break for the food, acceptable to me but the majority of the group unhappy.
Staff superb, go above and beyond, fair play for putting up with whinging golfers.
Beer prices, hmm, seen better, seen worse

All of us thoughly enjoyed the stay. Breakfast and dinner was good but disappointing that you could only have starter or dessert with main meal plus most main meals you had no vegetables or potatoes. Bar was well stocked but no real ale so half of the group visited the pub which was situated a 10 min walk away.
Golf course was decent and in good condition and lots of interesting holes. Not too long either.

Impressive from when you drive into the grounds. Greens like lightning, interesting layout. Some very picturesque holes. Think about a buggy, there is quite a lot of elevation changes.Reviewer Rating

Good Test
Super course which is narrow and needs to be plotted around. Using a big driver is sometimes needed but mid irons will help greatly. Greens were in excellent condition. Some of the rough close to fairways could do with a little more cut.Well worth a visit and two rounds will serve the newcomer well to the course.

Worthy of a stay!
Great set up with new builds, quality off-course provision and terrific pub at end of the road where real ale lives! Course has been remodelled and presents several memorable holes particularly the extremely challenging Par 5 sixth. Some tight drives, undulating greens and run-offs defend the course. Can understand the appeal of this as a stay and play course - will be back!Reviewer Rating

A challenging and lovely course
The course is challenging, with narrow fairways, plenty of rough and fast greens, but very enjoyable to play. Day one was very hot/sunny and we walked it with trolleys, which proved a feat, but day two was cooler and we had buggies and you noticed the difference re long walks between holes and a few hills.Reviewer Rating

Good challenge
Played in pretty wet conditions and so little carry but still get reward if kept to fairways. Greens recently treated and so still a bit sandy and bobbly but generally run true. Some very difficult holes and also a couple where par is possible and so a good challenge.Reviewer Rating

Fantastic course
Really nice course, nice layout and the greens were in great condition. My only criticism would be there is no map of each hole on the scorecard or near the start of each hole, so if your playing here for the first time your unsure on were to hit your tee shot.Reviewer Rating

Good course
Bit wetter than expected and with some tees favourably brought forward but overall in pretty good nick considering the weather. Tougher couse than used to but reflected in the 3 extra shots it gave most of us.We had a voucher for a 4ball, otherwise would have been very expensive at £50.

Despite recent awful weather course was in fantastic condition. Very little standing water. Greens have been worked on a month or so ago and hollow tined. Running true and can only get better. A course where several holes will leave you going ?wow? at the view. A few steep hills but worth it!Reviewer Rating

Hard
Played Old Thorns at the weekend for the first time. The drought has not been kind to it, on most holes the fairways are brown and the ground as hard as concrete. Any fairway with a slope, the ball just ended up at the bottom of the slope where ever you actually landed on the fairway.Similarly the greens were super fast, chipping on, the ball just ran through and stopped on the fringe if you were lucky. No pitch marks on the greens.
I’m a high handicapper and I found it very frustrating, we played on 2 consecutive days, and on the second day I was generally using 2 clubs less than the distance indicated, because even with a 9 iron you would get 20yards run out. For me it was impossible to control the distance.
I would play there again in more “normal” UK conditions, but not at the moment.
