What the club says: This 6,581 yard, par 72 championship course was designed by Commander John Harris, one of Britain's best known course architects and completed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas. The rolling nature of the landscape makes idyllic golf terrain. Peppered with mature trees, natural springs and several lakes which add to the visual pleasure of playing the course. Having been sympathetically designed for the less proficient golfer, this magnificent course still affords the better player a real challenge.
Most Helpful Review
Old Thorns has fantastic facilities around the clubhouse with a Starbucks, a great restaurant/bar, accomodation, a massive car park and an adequate driving range.
When it comes to the course we got a very good green fee rate which included a free meal on completion (Pie and Chips of which the pie was very dry and overcooked..), the course does struggle a little bit with its drainage, however, this didn't stop us having an enjoyable round. There were a good selection of holes and some great vantage points (You may have seen the 5th in many golf magazine adverts).
With the local area being home to some good quality golf courses this course lacks a little as it doesn't yet have the same history and classy feel (Course wise), having said that though its great value for money its well worth a stop.
Peter Alliss stated on the Open coverage this year that they were hoping to build a further "heather and pine" course on site which I can imagine could be even better looking at the land in the area. - Jul 23 2012
Golf Course Reviews for Old Thorns Golf Club
Our group of 24 were impressed with the course conditions after so much rain. We were looked after very well as always. Faultless.
Great course at a very good value. Bit wet in winter but still very playable
