What the club says: This 6,581 yard, par 72 championship course was designed by Commander John Harris, one of Britain's best known course architects and completed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas. The rolling nature of the landscape makes idyllic golf terrain. Peppered with mature trees, natural springs and several lakes which add to the visual pleasure of playing the course. Having been sympathetically designed for the less proficient golfer, this magnificent course still affords the better player a real challenge.

Beautiful and varied holes

Old Thornes is a very playable course for all abilities, while remaining challenging an interesting, hole after hole. Most holes are incredibly picturesque with lots of pine lined fairways and greens as well as beautiful views of Hampshire.

It's a corporate resort course and the only criticism is that there seems to be a bigger emphasis on weddings than golf. That may be the reason for some of the partially negative reviews it gets about the quality of some of the fairways. But I don't think it's and issue. We had a deluge of rain on the Saturday or our weekend and no areas were unplayable.

All in all, a great venue for a society weekender and a lovely course to play!

Great setting and layout, shocking condition. Greens are ropey and the fairways bald in many areas. This course has not been maintained and needs money spending on it. A real shame

Worth a visit.....but probably in a year or so

Had a 1 night break food was great, hotel was great however the course....well it's a lovely setup and a very enjoyable course...very hilly first 5 holes then flattens out. However the condition scares me, the green's very patchy is understatement and fairways are pretty much dead....the 9th hole is becoming a short par 4...maybe drivable...not sure if the apartments built next to the hole hole are safe. All in all its a great set up...but course nweds a year or so to recover and get back to its best....

Absolutely awful condition... has any money and time been spent on this course? Terrible state greens (those that are actually in play and not temporary),numerous temp tees, fairways that are hard to differentiate from rough in some instances and are in appealing condition anyway. A shortened 9th hole (this has been like this for months) which makes it pointless. Terrible signage so easy to get lost. To have the cheek to charge £35 to play this course in the awful state it is in is a travesty bordering on highway robbery. There is some serious work needs to be put in to make Old Thorns even semi presentable. At present I would avoid at all costs and play somewhere that doesn’t resemble a cow field.

Portsmouth area.

Great course but a little bit boggy there at the moment, fairways are a bit ragged, but in the summer it?s brilliant here, will play again.

Always a winner at Old Thorns

Some interesting changes with them having to re-design the 9th hole due to the encroaching new accommodation. A shame as this was a great challenging hole with it being a long Par 4. The club need to be careful not to diminish the attraction of this great course and give the playing side as much attention to the hotel and other facilities. Otherwise people will look elsewhere.

Top trees

Lovely course, beautiful countryside, great trees. Lots of water, hole 5 is very good. Hole 10 the par 3 over water is another highlight. Hole 8 is also tricky over water and caught me out; the wind was howling today. Hole 4a is a good par 3; great backdrop with forest around the green; big uphill shot required. Greens and bunkers very good. Hotel is very good, good food.

Tough, but fair

A cracking course, in really good condition considering how dry it's been. Some fairways were showing sign's of this, but overall it's in really good nick.
Shame about the removal of the 9th, but it's going to be an amazing golf complex when finished.
Some quirky holes have you thinking. The elevated tee shot off 5 is great, 15 & 16 are different, but the whole course is well laid out amongst trees & water.
The hotel is very nice. I ate in the sports bar which was OK.
