Rubbish and a rip off
Too busy. Far too pretentious and expensive. A very ordinary golf course where buggies at £40 is a disgrace especially since they have to keep to the path making the round long with long distances across the fairways.KEEP AWAY

Hard
Played Old Thorns at the weekend for the first time. The drought has not been kind to it, on most holes the fairways are brown and the ground as hard as concrete. Any fairway with a slope, the ball just ended up at the bottom of the slope where ever you actually landed on the fairway.Similarly the greens were super fast, chipping on, the ball just ran through and stopped on the fringe if you were lucky. No pitch marks on the greens.
I’m a high handicapper and I found it very frustrating, we played on 2 consecutive days, and on the second day I was generally using 2 clubs less than the distance indicated, because even with a 9 iron you would get 20yards run out. For me it was impossible to control the distance.
I would play there again in more “normal” UK conditions, but not at the moment.

not at its best at present
Played Old Thorns on the 26.10.17 . with a society . We have played previously 18 months ago in June . October is a poor time to play Old Thorns . It obviously drains badly the course had many bog patches . Greens were very poor . Would play again as I do like the course but it would have to be Summer .Reviewer Rating

Verging on the very disappointing
We did play in the course three times in September/October and I have to admit was not playing anywhere near my top game. It is a very pretty golf course with some nice views and one or two memorable holes. However maintenance of the course leaves a lot to be desired. At the time we played the fairways were not in terrific shape, greens were OK after they had been prepared for winter. The worst part of the course was the frankly penal rough which for most of us that played made a mockery of the rounds. We have some pretty good golfers and nobody managed to beat 30 stapleford points on any of the three rounds. The course does not drain that well and never has done. It certainly does not offer value for money unless you can get a deal.
Positives very pleasant pro shop staff, starter, and course marshal.
Would I come back, have to say doubtful. Maybe in the height of summer, this is not a course I suggest to play in the winter.

Fairways in a dreadful state
Played here before and I thought it was wonderful. Went back at the weekend with a society and was sorely disappointed with the state of the course. Greens were under maintenance which is perfectly understandable this time of year. The fairways however were in dreadful condition, and not just on regular landing areas. A lot of money is being spent on the hotel complex but it looks like the course is being ignored.Reviewer Rating

We've had very little rain in Portsmouth yet we were off at least 4/5 mats on the tee's. The buggies are only allowed on the cart paths which makes the course twice as long and slows up play considerably.
Food and drink very expensive, £4.50 a pint. £4 small bowl of chips.
For me the old 'Old Thorns' was more intimate and a better experience. The new is aimed at the hotel guest and corporate world, not the golfer.
Courses in the vacinity to compare, Liphook, Hindhead and Puttenham leave it in the 'shade'.
