What the club says: Founded on 6 May 1904 and is considered to be one of the finest courses in the South of England.

This undulating golf course has considerable charm and, with its large greens and a number of long par fours, provides you with a deceptively difficult but rewarding challenge.

The golf course bears the imprint of four famous golf course architects. It was designed by James Braid in 1904, then a youthful and recent open champion and one of the famous triumvirate with Vardon and Taylor. It was extensively redesigned in 1913 by Harry Colt, modified by Tom Simpson in 1930 and three new holes were designed by Donald Steel in 2001. The course as initially laid down by James Braid was some 5,500 yards in length but was lengthened by him to 6,000 yards in 1908, primarily because the newly invented Haskell rubber-cored golf ball was having just as dramatic effect on distances as is the new technology today. The course today stands at just under 6,500 yards.

Living in the past!

I’m not quite sure what the hype is all about at this club. Recently played in a pro/am here and I found the place really poor. Don’t get me wrong, clubhouse/facilities/food are all very good, but clearly that’s where the investment has been spent. I believe they are charging £80 on a county card (discount!) or £150 for a normal G/F but the course condition was very very poor. Tess/fairways were dreadful and the greens were fast but very untrue. The local pro shot-1 and played well but couldn’t understand how the greens worked. Anyway, there are plenty of other courses that are better value but also if you want to part with £150 there are many many other places very much better than this one.

Course was generally in good condition after a lot of rain over the preceding week, although some areas on a few of the fairways were a little bare. Greens were in very good condition.
On the whole a great course to play.

Wonderful course

The club house is really modern and all the photos and memorabilia around Justin Rose is fab! The room upstairs has such great views too.
Loved the course - it has similarities to the front nine at Formby and some often holes are framed so well by the trees.
Loved the tee shots on 2 and 5 where the fairway leads off at an angle from the tee -like some of the links you get at Saunton and Burnham & Berrow - so a few really nice holes. A couple of great downhillers like 6 and 14 are really fun to play.
Can't wait to go back......and the greens are immaculate!

A bit of bunker maintenance going on so no-one is resting on any laurels in the groundstaff i can see. Nice ground-staff guys too - nothing snooty - great fun/nice guys too!

Roll on my next invite in the summer........we're also considering it as a venue for our next company golf society too!

£30 with a member is a great price!

Course not very muddy, good greens; fast. Good green complexes on 8 and 17. 8th is two tiered par 3: shallow green, tier goes from left to right. Par 3s are good, not as extreme as blackmoors two long par 3s with big run offs. 17th green is shaped diagonally to the fairway with a bunker splitting the green.

Fantastic Course

A great course, well considered in its layout.

Fairways a little brown but fair because of the summer, will certainly try and play again soon, perhaps off the white tees as course a little short from the yellow.

Wonderful

Fantastic course and wonderful clubhouse that befit a club of this stature.
Manicured greens that are very, very quick. Fairways that run beautifully. Rough that doesn't punish that badly unless you're seriously wayward.

Shame the signature par 5 is out of action at the moment, but the reduced par four has the best temp green you'll ever putt on.

To be fair they are doing tons of work on it.
Thinks its competing with the likes of Hankley Common and its nowhere as good a layout its noisy next to motorway and railway line and they want a ?100 green fee?
We got on for ?30 as Guest
But if you are going to spend ?100 this is not the place tp play

Second time round here on a society day. Excellent course in decent condition, though they have taken quite a few trees out and the usual par 5 third is currently down to a 140 yard par 4 due to a water pipeline being laid through the course which is a bit odd. Greens rolled well but a bit firm and irons didn't stop that well so best to play short and let the ball run up for now at least. Excellent club house, facilities and meal afterwards. Look forward to playing again once the work mentioned above has been completed.

First time here playing on a society day. Lovely heathland course in great condition. Greens are quick and have all sorts of borrow on them. Fairways and surrounding areas were well maintained as they'd just had a top amateur comp played the week before I think. Course is a real challenge as several par 4's are over 400 yards from the yellows. Excellent service from all those at the club and I hope to play it again next year.

I am lucky to have the ability to play this lovely course quite often as my dad is a member and has been for many years. A good challenge, good length but certainly score able in places even for the higher handicapper like me! If you get the opportunity to play it don't turn it down plus the Justin Rose room is worth a look!
