Great set-up and 2 courses

Renowned as one of the best courses in Bedfordshire, and probably the first place Nick Faldo won an open competition (as a junior).

We played the Old Course, which is well laid out and a delight to play, although because the fairways haven't recovered from the very dry summer of 2018, preferred lies are in place on all areas mown to fairway length.

Preferred lies is also in place in bunkers, because of Covid19, and the resultant removal of rakes. I only visited one, and whilst it looked immaculate, being freshly raked by the greenkeepers, the sand below the top level was quite firm, resulting in a flyer over the green!
This round was in the Bedfordshire County Senior Championships, and therefore played from the back tees, where CSS was 73 on the day against a par of 71, and this was on a very calm day ? very little wind to worry about, and a lovely sunny day. The longer par 4?s are hard to reach in 2 for us older guys, and that certainly showed.

Greens were quite quick, and very true, with the ball going exactly where you sent it, although they seemed a little firm, so difficult to get a full shot into the greens to stop quickly, unless you hit it very firmly.
The course has many very mature trees, although I did notice that they have plans to remove, or at least pollard a number of the older ones, and presumably they will also remove the few dead ones that are still in place.

When this Championship was re-organised, the restaurant hadn't re-opened, so I can't comment on food or prices, but I have eaten here before, and remember it as always being very good. The bar is well organised to avoid people congregating (Covid19 again), although that does give a rather strange one way system to enter and leave to clubhouse.

All in all and enjoyable day, and I would certainly recommend, and I will be back as soon as possible, as I always enjoy playing here.

Just top quality

A lovely traditional golf course, with only criticism being too many par fours, Beautifully kept, excellent greens and very friendly.

Top Course

Played the Carthagena Course. Greens were pure. Very fast and very true. In fact the whole greens complexes were in fabulous condition, as were the bunkers. The 16th hole is a delight to play and very unique. My only criticism is the fairways on this course, they are in terrible condition, and never really withstand any summer heat or prolonged dry periods. The course would really benefit from fairway irrigation. Nonetheless a really great course!

The John O'Gaunt course is challenging at my level, but a top quality course in excellent condition. It has recovered well from the drought.

Well worth a visit

Lovely Parkland course which is always kept to very high standards. Playable throughout the June downpour, there was no flooding on the course at all. Best advice would be to steer clear of the trees, apparently chipping out sideways doesn't make for great scoring!!!

Definitely worth a visit.

Because of the heat it was a bit yellow. Would love to play again once we've had some rain.

Renowned as one of the best courses in Bedfordshire, and probably the first place Nick Faldo won an open competition (as a junior). The course is well laid out and a delight to play, although this year it is looking rather brown due to the very sunny weather, and no rain for 5 weeks. Bunkers were a little variable (a member I played with complained of no sand in one, but there was plenty in ALL the ones I visited). We played from the back tees on a windy day, and the course showed it's teeth especially with erratic bounces off the hard ground. Greens could have been quicker, but with so much sun, it's good that they leave some grass so they don't burn badly. Fairways were very dry and 'sunburnt'. Tees were immaculate, and overall course was as you would expect for a County Senior Championships.
