The best part of it was that the round was free as the greens were unplayable. The whole course is unplayable and I left on the 8th. It's such a shame though because the layout of the holes is fantastic. A lot of work and money needed to make it playable, but if it's invested it would be a cracking course.

Never played on such a terrible course, greens are brown with no grass, only weeds. Fairways not cut and very poorly signed. Staff didn't seem to care & definitely no course maintenance going on. AVOID!

I used to play here a lot, it was always in fairly good condition, and it's a well laid out course. I played there on Saturday, and it is almost certainly the worst course in Essex. The "greens" were brown and black, not a living bit of grass in sight. Every single bunker was unplayable, and there was no definition to any of the brown fairways either. The ONLY thing this course has going for it now, is that the layout is still awesome. SOOO much potential, yet SOOO poorly maintained. Wouldn't even pay a fiver to play again.

I was visiting the area and looking for somewhere to play a round of golf. However I really should have listened to the reviews and not gone to Hylands. I thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt but it really is as bad as others have said. In some areas you can't tell what is rough and what is fairway. And if you're shot is anything other than bullet straight you'll have a job to find your ball in amongst the countless weeds, dandelions, Daisy's and grass that hasn't been cut well at all. The bunkers are a complete mess and as for the greens, slow, bumpy, awful. I will certainly never be returning.

We played the nine hole course on 27 March 2016. It cost £13.50 which is expensive when you see the abysmally poor quality course. It is difficult to distinguish the fairway from the rough - the grass looked like it hadn't been cut all winter and the bunkers resembled big craters with weeds, moss and grass - there was no sand in any of the bunkers. It's no surprise then that the course was empty on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. We certainly won't be going back there. The owners obviously don't read the reviews or want to invest money in making the course fit for purpose. Quite frankly, I would be embarrassed to be associated with the complex. It's the worst, I've ever seen.

Must be worst course in uk, we played as a 4 ball all regular golfers but lost loads of balls, even on the fairway, don't think the own a lawn mower. It took 3hours for 9 holes cause we was forever looking for our ball
Don't waste your time or money

The bunkers are a disgrace. Total lack of sand. The fairways are in dire need of a decent cut and some of the greens are poor with patches of weeds etc.

Probably the worst course I have played in Essex, would rather play the Pitch and Putt near the town centre. £26 for a round is absolute robbery, the owners must be laughing. I would pay £10 a round for this course. While it could be good, there are too many negatives, for example: Bunkers do not have sand in them, more of a soil/sand/dirt hybrid full of stones. If you hit your ball just off the fairway, you're in the rough... Not too bad, you might think: Wrong. There is only one cut of rough and it is knee high thick long grass that means you have a 90% chance of losing your ball.
The greens were by far the worst I have ever played on, large patches of brown dirt and very inconsistent speed due to the way they are kept. The practice green is astroturf so is pointless before playing a round. Although you could never practice for greens like the ones they have. There is also a mini golf course which we played for free, although I believe you are meant to pay for it, which is a joke in itself. A fun mini golf course which they should let people play on after the round to make up for how terrible the course is.
There is no bar which is slightly annoying but there is a pro shop that sold the essentials we needed such as tees and pencils, and they also sell some soft drinks and snacks.
One positive: the driving range is good.
2/10, would not recommend. Don't waste your time.

This golf course is basically a field that someone has gone round and happend to put in 18 holes in the ground. It is dreadful. The rough is so long just off the fairway that it is almost impossible to find your ball. The bunkers are sandless, the greens are rough. The layout is basically round the field and back again.
Very expensive at £26 a round. Do not waste your money.

To be honest, at £26 a round was expecting a quality course. Plenty of dogleg holes and water to contend with. However, course, greens and bunker conditions were dreadful. Greens were 40% brown on most holes, bunkers had sand which had grass growing through, and were certainly not cared for. Course is in such a great location, but needs a lot of TLC. No bar either for aftergame drinks. Driving range facilities looked good, but not used.

I have played a number of courses in my life but none as bad as this for what you pay. If it was £10-£15 for 18 holes then I would have been more accepting, however for £26 it was appalling. The fairways were of poor quality and the greens were completely brown. That grass had died some time ago. The whole course looked like it was never watered. Most of my shots to the green that came in high bounced like they were hitting hardcourt and large plumes of dust flew up. The bunkers were not bunkers. The sand in them was minimal and they were full of stones and most of them were pretty much soil. I can understand that renovating the clubhouse may be costly but a coat of paint and filling up the large holes revealing wires would have been good. The carpet was repaired using stips of gaffa tape and the front desk looked like it was held together the same way. There are a number of courses not much further away from Chelmsford that provide course and facilities of a considerably higher quality for the same price or less.
