disappointed. with a name Broke Hill i was supprised that it was essentailly flat throught most if not all of the course. Add to that as a 1 ball playing at 3pm on a weekeday it took 5 hours to get round as the tee time had been filled with 4 ball groups who refused to allow people to play thru even when looking for lost balls. A marshall did come out but mearly appologised to the players behind them and did not as the slow players to speed up or move asside. Will not be heading back anytime soon. Course itself was average and in the main boring.

Much too good to close

Hearing that Broke Hill was going to close on 31st Dec, I was intent to get there and play it before it vanished forever. With just two weeks to go to closure, I was expecting a course that would be unkempt, run down and in just about playable condition, but whoa what a lovely surprise! From the friendly girls upstairs in the well appointed and large clubhouse, and the very good breakfast to the lad in the pro shop, who couldn't have been more helpful, albeit with an empty shop. The courses starts with a couple of straight-forward par fours and then returns clubhouse bound with a strong Par 5 and then a Par 3. The first five holes are all fairly flat and straightforward but the 6th is the first really strong hole, this being a 437 par 4 with a blind drive and then doglegging left. Be very pleased to get on in regulation here and is very worthy of its Stroke index 1. This is followed by a short but delightful par 4 at 355 yards where you are advised to aim at the marker taking the mounding and two bunkers on the left of this slight dogleg left. The first half finishes with a strong and quite long par 5 where the approach has to avoid a pond close to the green on the left. The back nine starts with pretty standard fare and is still quite flat but the meat of the course starts at the par 5 12th, which whilst not that long, has an awkward and wide ditch at the bottom of the small dip. This is followed by another delightful but short par 4 where care has to be taken both left and right, and then the 14th, where the tee overlooks a rolling fairway which veers to the right. To me, the most attractive hole on the course is the Par 5 15th, where the drive is blind to a marker and a falling fairway which then turns left and uphill to a well protected green. The final hole is a little tester as the green is fronted by a large pond.
Overall, a very pleasing and easy walking course, maybe with too many shortish par fours but overall very enjoyable. For the middle of December and with the course closing for ever in just two weeks, the greens were short and true, the fairways perfect, and best of all, the bunkers had obviously been raked that morning - that surely is dedication to the end by the staff.
Why is this popular and profitable venue closing - ha, who knows, but I suspect it is something to do with it being sold for huge profit for building - I shall say no more, but what a shame to the 500 or so members and all those who have played here since opening in 1990. For such a young course, it has the appearance and feel of a course much older - it shall be missed.

This review refers to Stapleford Abbotts (Abbotts) Golf Club. The greens are well cared for, but the fairways are poorly defined. The teeing areas are uneven, and the course is in need of some attention. the rough is overly long aswell as being thick and plentiful. Many of the trees have bramble bushes at their base; so finding, playing or recovering balls is dangerous, and time consuming. The course is difficult and slow play is inevitable in these conditions

Broke Hill has been a go to course for us for a few years, not too long but fairly narrow and requires thought and skill to get round. Sadly in the last 24 months the course seems to have gone noticeably downhill in terms of maintenance and care which is a shame.
