Superb heathland course

My Broadstone debut at the age of 49 having lived in the local area for all of my life, but it was worth the wait.
This is a superbly picturesque and undulating course with plenty of interesting holes, notably the SI 1 7th which is a really unique hole with a truncated fairway and then a big carry over a valley to the green.

Playing here completes the set for me of having played each of East Dorset's premier courses, namely Broadstone, Ferndown, Parkstone and Remedy Oak.
I'll need to reflect on it in time but it's a contest between Broadstone and Remedy for best course - both are superb.

Green fees are steep here for visitors to reflect the premium tag but I was lucky to get on the course for £40 with a friend who is a new member. If you get the chance, play this course because it is great!

Hilly Course

Right from the start you need to be on your game. Lots of rises and falls plus undulating greens. Real test with the course in really good condition. If you’re on your game this is for you.

Challenging Course

If you play this course for the first time be aware that there are a couple of blind shots that you need to be aware of. The seventh is stroke index one and pretty much has two blind shots to reach this difficult par four. If it’s not to busy take a look before playing. Lots of hills so take a buggy if the legs aren’t great! Enjoy its a challenge but in great condition

Disappointing condition

Played on fairly nice conditions in early April but to my surprise was pretty disappointed with the condition given this hasn’t been the wettest of winters.
Course has a great layout, lots of challenge and some great settings.
However, the greens, many fairways and the fringes around the greens were all patchy whilst the tees were atrocious. I think for a top 100 course charging over £100 for visitors I’m expecting better to be honest.
Members and clubhouse service all very friendly just wish the course had been in better nick.

Bring A game

Beast of a course, played on a mild day wouldn't want to play when the wind is up! If hitting generous fairways can score well but go off into heather be ready to pay the penalty.

Undulating heathland challenge

There are some very challenging holes especially in the wind we played in. I'm looking forward to returning and playing again in the summer when the conditions have improved. Some fairways were still recovering from the summer drought and the greens were surprisingly slow. One hole was closed due to course improvements but hole 9b was in play. The team in the pro shop were very friendly and extremely helpful. Broadstone has a very well stocked pro shop. The clubhouse was having renovations but that didn't disturb us too much. Overall, a great golf club but the playing surfaces need improvement.

Long, difficult and unforgiving.

Playing off 18 this course was never going to be easy. You have to hit a long drive and your approach shots need to be precise otherwise the bunkers await you. Despite the challenges I really enjoyed my round once I had got the first couple of holes under my belt. Some holes are played blind so try to play with someone who is familiar with the course. The fairways and greens are superb, in fact some of the grass just prior to the greens are better than most greens at other courses. The speed of the greens was comparable to other local courses which was a bonus for me. Getting a birdie on the 15th topped off my day when my 18ft putt dropped in the hole. I look forward to another opportunity to play this course in the not too distant future.

Stunningly scenic heathland course

Broadstone always ranks high in many top 100 course listings and it definitely deserves its place. It is a stunningly scenic heathland course, spread out across a very expansive heathland area. No two holes are the same and work is underway to restore all the bunkering to the original Harry Colt designs. It requires some straight hitting as the rough/ heathland areas are hard to play from. Approaches to the greens are often very exacting so you need to be on your game to score here. It is also a very hilly course so the walk is strenuous. The only disappointing aspect of the course were the greens, which are undergoing a 3-4 year transitional process from meadow grass to poanna grass. This means the greens are inconsistent in speed and not particularly smooth. If you can overlook this, you will find a first class golf course.
