Broadstone Golf Club was founded in 1898 and re-designed in 1914 by Harry Shapland Colt, this superb course has been host to many national and regional competitions. The fairways were once graced by Sir Winston Churchill.

OK to start on a positive note, the welcome and hospitality were excellent throughout. The staff, both in the pro shop and the bar, as well as at the halfway hut, were friendly, professional and a real credit to the club. In that respect, the experience could not be faulted.Broadstone is clearly a very fine layout. The classic Harry Colt design shines through, with a strong, challenging test of golf and some excellent use of elevation, particularly from the tee. There are a few quirky holes, but overall the course is very readable, with most holes laid out in front of you. From a design perspective, it is easy to see why the course holds its Top 100 reputation.
However, I feel it is important to frame the following comments in context. This is a premier golf club, with green fees around the £100 mark and annual subscriptions in excess of £2,000. As such, it is entirely reasonable to benchmark it against other courses operating at a similar level.
On this basis, the conditioning was disappointing.
While we recognise that recent dry weather may have had an impact, the overall presentation of the course felt more in line with a lower-tier pay and play venue than a top-ranked private members club. The fairways in particular have clearly suffered, seemingly as a result of recent drainage works, and there appears to have been insufficient follow-up care to restore them properly. The overall effect was a rather scruffy appearance.
We did not encounter any greenkeeping staff on the course, which perhaps reflects the broader issue. This did not feel like simply a consequence of dry conditions, but rather a lack of attention to some of the fundamentals that elevate a course from good to exceptional. Simple details such as cleanly defined bunker edges, trimmed sprinkler heads, consistent mowing lines and timely repair of worn areas all make a significant difference, and these were areas where the course was lacking.
The greens were somewhat mixed, with noticeable variations in grass coverage and untidy run-off areas. Bunkers were generally acceptable, but again lacked sharpness in presentation. The fairways, however, were the weakest element and, in their current state, it is difficult to imagine the course being tournament-ready without winter rules anytime soon without significant improvement.
There were also some practices, such as the use of visible turf plugs (including on approaches to greens), which one would not typically expect to see on a course of this standing.
It is perhaps inevitable to compare Broadstone with nearby courses such as Parkstone, and at present it unfortunately falls short on conditioning despite having a comparable, if not equally strong, layout.
It is worth noting that other feedback suggests this may be a relatively recent decline, and hopefully that proves to be the case. With some rainfall and, more importantly, a renewed focus on course presentation and maintenance standards, there is no reason why Broadstone should not return to the level its design deserves.
In summary, a superb golfing test and a club with excellent hospitality, but currently let down by course condition. With some attention to detail and improvement in maintenance, it has every opportunity to sit comfortably back amongst the very best.

Superb heathland course
My Broadstone debut at the age of 49 having lived in the local area for all of my life, but it was worth the wait.This is a superbly picturesque and undulating course with plenty of interesting holes, notably the SI 1 7th which is a really unique hole with a truncated fairway and then a big carry over a valley to the green.
Playing here completes the set for me of having played each of East Dorset's premier courses, namely Broadstone, Ferndown, Parkstone and Remedy Oak.
I'll need to reflect on it in time but it's a contest between Broadstone and Remedy for best course - both are superb.
Green fees are steep here for visitors to reflect the premium tag but I was lucky to get on the course for £40 with a friend who is a new member. If you get the chance, play this course because it is great!

Hilly Course

Beautiful Broadstone

Challenging Course
If you play this course for the first time be aware that there are a couple of blind shots that you need to be aware of. The seventh is stroke index one and pretty much has two blind shots to reach this difficult par four. If it’s not to busy take a look before playing. Lots of hills so take a buggy if the legs aren’t great! Enjoy its a challenge but in great conditionReviewer Rating
