Overpriced
Judging it on the course (not the hyperbole about old Tom) there’s plenty to judge as poor. Greens are hellish slow. And pitted but the innumerable rabbits. And well below average. Tee boxes uneven. Fairways also ravaged by rabbits. Stupidly expensive.Reviewer Rating

My Ultimate Course
Took up golf 14 years ago and have since had a passion for playing different courses. I am now upto nearly 300. My dream has been to find a course that combines a challenge within a perfect setting. I found it in Askernish. The course attracted me with its history of being designed by old Tom Morris and then reopened by Kenny Dalgleish. It is an incredible setting, the Mahair with its wild flowers is just beautiful, the course harps back to the early days of golf and is rustic, natural and a spectacular challenge. I did not stop smiling despite the difficulty finding the wayward balls and the odd rabbit hole. My advice:- make the journey and play this gorgeous courseReviewer Rating

A must play course to appreciate original links golf
Played here in Spring 2019 for the second time. My first was about four or five years previously and in the summer but only managed 12 holes then as the wind was so strong I couldn't hit my driver as it was being blown around so much.The 2019 experience was on a day of gentle (for here) breeze but only a couple of weeks after the course had reopened after the winter, so it still had most of the animal droppings from their winter stay).
Greens and tees were pretty good, fairways not as well defined as they would be a few weeks later but the flip side was the rough was down from the recent sheep and cattle munching.
The course design is as it would have been, when Old Tom originally mowed the course out of the machir, Its not easy but after a few rounds you do start to know where to go and not go. The scenery and views are brilliant, we even saw an eagle go for a rabbit. If you play this only once you will regret not being able to play it again, so book to play twice at least, it is that good.

A remote classic in South Uist

An utterly unique golfing experience. A very organic links which works with the ecological balance of the stunning environment it is part of. The course is quite a golfing riddle so will take a few rounds and a bit of patience to get close to a good score, but it won't take much to get hooked and find yourself wanting to keep coming back for more! Facilities are fairly basic but hospitable and in keeping with the setting. At the very least a once in a life time golfing experience.

I have been coming over from Canada once or twice a year since Askernish was re-opened and have watched this course blossom into one of the great courses in the world. As a living museum to the craft and genius of Old Tom Morris it has truly earned the title as the Holy Grail of Golf. If there ever was a \'bucket list\' course, this is it. I\'m already booked for the Askernish Open (August 2015).

Course has fantastic wild, remote feel, just you and the ball, the wind, the adjoining ocean, made the more so by the small number of players on the course. Went back in the evening and I was the only person on the course on a Saturday night. First six holes are quite open and fairly flat, then as you arrive on the 7th tee on top of a dune, there\'s a definite wow! feeling. Holes 7 to 12 against the prevailing 2-club headwind provided a huge challenge to a mid-handicapper. Hole 11 has to be one of the hardest par 3s I've played - 200 yard carry to plateau green across valley, no landing area except the green! Little white daisies and yellow (buttercups?) all along the fairways in May/June make finding the ball in the fairway somewhat difficult. Bring orange balls! and watch your line carefully. Greens are slow but quite true - came up short on several steep downhill putts - but that's good since only one or two greens are even remotely flattish. Buying course guide would help to know how far certain carries are. Hoping the course gets input to GPS as that would really help. Course boasts natural conditions, which is at once a source of its unique beauty and a bother, especially the numerous rabbit holes that dot certain fairways. Clubhouse is a brand new wee building with an excellent cafe - homemade carrot cake by the lady who runs it is highly recommended. Would I play there again? - yes. Would I want to play there all the time? - no.
