Faldo Series Asia Heads to the Himalayas

By: Golf Shake | Fri 05 Dec 2014

Gokarana Forest Resort is the venue for the third edition of the Faldo Series Nepal Championship this week.

The 14th leg of the record-breaking Faldo Series Asia season, the event will show-case the brightest young golfing talents from the South Asian nation that is located in the Himalayas and bordered to the north by China and to the south, east and west by India.

Committed to developing golf in the country, the Nepal Golf Association is affiliated to the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation and The R&A with the Faldo Series Nepal Championship having quickly established itself as one of the highlights on the do-mestic golfing calendar.

Six-time Major championship winner Sir Nick, Britain’s most successful golfer, said: “One of the objectives of the Faldo Series Asia is to help grow the game across the continent – not only in established golfing nations but also countries where the game is developing.

“I’m delighted that the Faldo Series Nepal Championship has become so popular in the country and is playing an important role in providing an opportunity for young players there to hone their skills in a competitive environment.

“It is my hope that in the not too distant future we will see girls and boys from Nepal challenging for honours in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final and going on to suc-ceed on the international stage.”

In last year’s event at Gokarna Forest Resort, located on the outskirts of Kathmandu and surrounded by temples including a world heritage monument of Changu Nara-yan, it was Tanka Bahadur Karki emerged victorious with a 36-hole score of 148, four-over-par.

The overall winner this week will be rewarded with a starting spot in the ninth Faldo Series Asia Grand Final to be staged at Mission Hills in Shenzhen next March.

Also receiving an invitation to participate in the China showpiece that will be hosted by Sir Nick Faldo are the winners of the Boys’ Division and Girls’ Division respec-tively.

Supported by The R&A, ISPS and Mission Hills and endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation, the 2014-15 Faldo Series Asia campaign stretches over 11 months and is made up of a minimum of 20 championships.

Recognised as the only global amateur series for boys and girls, the Faldo Series was established in 1996, expanding to Asia in 2006.

Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching more than 7,000 golfers each year. Past winners include Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at July’s Open Championship and August’s US PGA Championship.
