Cheese’s Mature Performance Clinches Europro Victory at De Vere Slaley Hall

By: Golf Shake | Wed 20 Aug 2014

Tournament golf returned to De Vere Slaley Hall, as the Priestman Course played host to the EuroPro Tour’s Break90 classic, won by Andrew Cheese following a sudden death three-man playoff. The Midlands Professional, based at Sutton Coldfield GC, closed with a birdie on the first playoff hole to claim his maiden EuroPro title.

Having finished the final round tied at 12-under alongside Johnathon Caldwell and Jack Colegate, Cheese went on to fire his approach shot to within inches of the pin on the 18th hole, tapping in for birdie to claim the £10,000 first prize.

The 54-hole event was staged across the Priestman Course at Slaley Hall, cementing the championship credentials both of the course itself and of the magnificent De Vere Resort as a whole. Having previously held the VEKA & Network VEKA UK Open on the EuroPro Tour in 2010 and European Tour Qualifying School on numerous occasions over recent years, the challenging par-72 layout has once again proven itself as one of the finest tournament standard golf courses in the UK.

The illustrious history of the Priestman course was further developed in the penultimate round of the tournament, as eventual runner up Jack Colegate shot a superb course record round of 63, including nine birdies, to top the leaderboard ahead of the final round.

As well as The Priestman course, Slaley Hall is also home to The Hunting Course, which held the European Senior Tour’s PGA Seniors Championship for five consecutive years up until 2012, and was a regular host venue on the European Tour. The resort boasts an illustrious list of winners, including Lee Westwood, Retief Goosen and De Vere Golf Ambassador Colin Montgomerie, further underlining Slaley Hall’s position amongst the best tournament venues in the country.

Keith Pickard, De Vere Group Director of Golf, commented: “It is brilliant to once again host tournament golf at Slaley Hall, a venue which has successfully staged many professional championships over the past decade. The organisation of the event and the condition of the course were both first class, and are indicative of the standards across all the De Vere Golf Resorts.

“It was great to see the high quality of the course matched by the high quality of the field, highlighted by the new course record that was set during the week. The playoff created an entertaining finish for the spectators, in what has been another wonderful platform to showcase the De Vere Hotels and Resorts portfolio and we look forward to hosting further high level tournament golf in the future”
