Faldo Series Growth Continues in Greece

By: Golf Shake | Wed 21 Aug 2013

faldoA record field is expected for the fourth Faldo Series Greece Championship at the Glyfada Golf Club of Athens on September 3-4.  Many of the Mediterranean’s top young golfers will be vying to emulate the success of Israel’s Assaf Cohen, who finished runner-up at the 2012 Faldo Series Grand Final.

“Assaf Cohen was a huge success story for the Greece Championship at last year’s Grand Final and we hope that his achievement will encourage more golf participation across the region,” said Sir Nick Faldo.  “I thank Glyfada Golf Club for their continued support and commend them for their ongoing commitment to junior golf in Greece.”

“We are excited to host the Faldo Series in Athens for the second time and look forward to welcoming another strong international field,” added Spyros Rokadikis, President of Glyfada Golf Club of Athens.  “Previous winners had a unique opportunity to learn from Sir Nick at the Grand Final in Northern Ireland and this year’s champions can look forward to another once-in-a-lifetime experience at The Greenbrier in the USA.”

Talented golfers aged 12 to 21 will line up in the 36-hole Greece Championship at Glyfada next month.  Competitors in previous years have represented countries including Cyprus, Malta, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Israel, Lebanon, Italy, Sweden and the USA, as well as Greece.

With the field divided into five age-groups, three boys and two girls will earn the final qualification spots for the seventeenth Grand Final, to be hosted by Faldo at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, USA on October 22-24.

Supported by The R&A, ISPS Handa and the European Tour, the 2013 Faldo Series Europe schedule features a record 20 tournaments in 15 countries including six in England plus others in Ireland, Abu Dhabi, Chile, the Czech Republic, Scotland, Austria, Wales, Brazil, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia, Greece and the USA.

Established in 1996, 40 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 30 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year.  Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.

In September 2014, Faldo will begin taking students at a full-time residential academy for education and golf development in America.  The first ever Faldo Series Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona marks another significant step in the programme’s history.

Golfers born in 1992 or later wishing to enter the fourth Faldo Series Greece Championship at Glyfada Golf Club on September 3-4 should email [email protected] or visit www.ggca.gr.
