Sir Alex Ferguson is announced as Honorary Captain of the Golf Club at De Vere Mottram Hall

De Vere Mottram Hall in Cheshire have announced that Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed to become the Honorary Captain of the Golf Club.

The recently retired Manchester United legend was presented with his title at the Gala Dinner to mark the resort’s re-launch last month, following the major £6 million makeover which has transformed the entire resort. Ferguson has been an active member at Mottram Hall for a number of years and is one of the many sporting stars to regularly play on the par 72 championship golf course.

The announcement comes ahead of an exciting summer season for the resort, as it prepares to host the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship for the first time from the 6-9 June.

Ferguson has always enjoyed golf and has been a regular face at the Cheshire resort for many years.

“We are delighted to welcome Sir Alex as Honorary Captain of the Golf Club at De Vere Mottram Hall. An association with someone who has achieved so much and been so ever-present is testament to the grand plans that we have for the resort,” commented Daniel Hodson, De Vere Director of Golf. “His achievements at Manchester United and throughout his career are unlikely to ever be matched and we are honoured to have him on board. He has seen a number of changes and upgrades at Mottram Hall since he first started playing here, and he will be the perfect ambassador for the resort going into the exciting summer season.”

In preparation for hosting the European Senior’s Tour in June, Mottram Hall has undergone a number of refurbishments, including the addition of several new and renovated bunkers, water features and aesthetic improvements. A new short game skills area on the new short game practice area has been built ahead of the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship next month. This flagship event on the European Seniors Tour will welcome legends of the game to Mottram Hall, including Ryder Cup legends Ian Woosnam and Sam Torrance, along with defending champion Paul Wesselingh who have all confirmed their attendance.

Competitors at the tournament will also experience renowned De Vere hospitality in the new contemporary clubhouse, featuring De Vere’s signature Claret Jug bar and restaurant, a sensational halfway house, and refurbished golf shop and changing rooms. The converted 18th century country house hotel has also been given a full makeover, along with the Club and Spa to provide the very best facilities, making every stay extra special.
