Mid-Range Irons Review

By: | Wed 27 Jun 2012

The Mid-Range iron market is highly competitive and has been an area in which new UK golf companies, such as Benross and MD have thrived. This competitive market allows the consumer to find some fantastic value golf equipment much of which is manufactured to a very high standard including shafts and grips from some of the World leaders in golf components , such as True Temper, UST and Golf Pride.

Golfshake have taken a look at what equipment is available in the Mid-range market for the 2012 season. The Mid-range market has been defined as irons priced between £99.00 and £349.00 for a full set.

Benross Golf Quad Speed Irons

The Benross Quad Speed Combo Irons continue Benross's tradition for producing high quality and easy to use game improvement irons. The Quad Speed set is made up of a combination of hybrids in the longer irons and more traditional over-size cavity in the shorter irons. This combination makes them a perfect choice for those looking to gain consistency in ball striking and flight.

Both the hybrids in the 5 and 6 irons and the deep under-cut cavities in the shorter irons move the centre of gravity back and lower in the head creating a longer and higher ball flight as well as increasing the ease of use.

A Benross concept steel shaft is fitted as standard. The shaft features a low kick point to gain a higher launch angle and the set is completed with Benross rubber grips.

MD Golf Superstrong ST2 Irons

MD have now established themselves as a major force in the mid-range golf market, in particular with high quality performance wedges and drivers, they have however been manufacturing great value iron sets as well. The MD Superstrong ST2 irons are testament to MD’s ability to produce high quality yet affordable golf equipment.

The ST2 irons are aimed at the mid-high handicap market and feature a traditional head shape, but with a thick top line and deep undercut cavity. In addition a wide sole helps to create a shallow ball/turf impact.

The heads are made from a soft 403 stainless steel for increased feel and workability and a UST Proforce graphite shaft is fitted as standard as is a UST rubber grip.

John Letters T8 Hybrid Irons

John Letters have seen somewhat of resurgence in recent years under the ownership of direct Golf.  The John Letters T8 Hybrid irons are the latest game improvement iron offering and similar to other sets on the market, they feature a hybrid in the longer irons and a deep undercut cavity in the shorter irons.

The hybrid  3 and 4 iron have a deep centre of gravity head  helping to increase confidence and produce good ball striking, this results in an optimum ball flight. The 5-SW has been manufactured from a soft 431 stainless steel for increased feel and features a deep cavity to help produce consistent ball striking.  In addition each iron has a perimeter weighted head to increase the MOI and stability throughout the hitting area.

The longer, hybrid irons have been fitted with a light weight, low torque graphite shaft and the shorter irons have been fitted with a high performance True Temper steel shaft.

Lynx Black Cat Irons

The new Lynx Black Cat is the latest version of a historic model.  Much like their predecessors they have been designed with ease of use and game improvement in mind. The head is manufactured from a blend of steels and features a rubber shock absorbing cartridge in the back of the head for optimum feel. The head is a traditional shape with a deep under-score cavity to lower the centre of gravity and increase the ease of use.

Each set comes with a top quality shaft as standard in the form of a True Temper Black Gold and an equally high quality grip in the form of a Golf Pride DD2.

Dunlop NZ 9 Irons

The Dunlop NZ 9 irons offer a solid budget option for any beginner or player looking to improve their game with a complete iron set. Made from stainless steel and featuring a deep cavity back, thick top line and perimeter weighting, these irons are easy to use and help inspire confidence through consistent flight and ball striking.

Each set has a high quality True Temper shaft fitted as standard and an ultra sticky Gecco- tac grip.

Forgan IWD2 Irons

Forgan have emerged as a leader in custom fit in the budget/mid-range market. The Forgan IWD2 set is their latest model and is made from a soft 431 stainless steel for maximum feel and features a deep underscore cavity. This cavity moves the centre of gravity further back and lower in the head to help create a high optimal ball flight and consistent strike.  Each iron is perimeter weighted to increase the MOI and in turn produce a larger sweet spot.

The IWD2’s are complimented by a premium lightweight Apollo steel shaft and each set can be upgraded to a Forgan super-lite 58 gram shaft for increased club head speed and distance.
