Faldo Series to Return to A-ROSA Resort Scharmützelsee & Sporting Club Berlin
Following the success of last year’s inaugural Faldo Series Germany Championship, Sir Nick Faldo has announced that his global golf development series will return to the Faldo Course at A-ROSA Resort Scharmützelsee and the Sporting Club Berlin in Bad Saarow on August 9-10, 2011.
“The Faldo Series provides opportunities through golf for over 5,000 young participants worldwide and I am delighted that with the support of A-ROSA we saw such a large field at last year’s first event in Germany,” commented Faldo. “I enjoyed spending time with the Germany Championship winners during our Europe Grand Final at the Lough Erne Resort in Ireland in September.”
The six-time Major Champion added: “I am very proud of our involvement with the course at the Sporting Club Berlin and thank the Sport & Spa Resort A-ROSA Scharmützelsee and the Sporting Club Berlin for their commitment to the Series and especially in growing the Faldo Series Germany Championship.”
“The inaugural Faldo Series Germany Championship in 2010 was a milestone for us and we look forward to welcoming back competitors to our Faldo Course in August,” said A-ROSA Director of Golf Vanessa Herbon.
Sporting Club Berlin President Wolf-Dieter Wolf added: “We support and admire Sir Nick’s commitment to give back to the game and we are pleased to offer talented young German golfers the opportunity to learn from a true champion and test themselves on the international stage.”
Nicholas Inderthal from Kleinmachnow won last year’s Faldo Series Germany Championship on the Faldo Course at Sporting Club Berlin, host to several Tour events and the Eisenhower Trophy in 2000. The 17 year-old followed his one-shot victory over Alexander Verschaeren with a top-15 finish at the Faldo Series Europe Grand Final in front of Faldo and former winner Rory McIlroy.
Verschaeren of Luxembourg, Germany’s Marcel Ohorn from Berlin, Christina Zuber of Naila and Jacqueline Willenbrock from Halle also qualified for the 14th Grand Final in Ireland as winners of their age group. Five winners from this year’s 36-hole Germany Championship – open to boys and girls aged 12 to 21 – will qualify for the World Amateur Golf Ranking event at Lough Erne, another Faldo Design course, on September 12-14, 2011.
Established in 1996, 35 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 25 countries worldwide with over 5,000 golfers participating each year. Former winners include Ryder Cup star McIlroy, Nick Dougherty, Marc Warren, John Parry, Melissa Reid, Florentyna Parker and ladies world number one Yani Tseng, all winners on Tour.
Supported by The R&A, the European Tour and Lough Erne Resort, the 2011 Faldo Series Europe schedule features a record 18 tournaments in 11 different countries including seven in England plus others in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Czech Republic, Russia, Greece, The Netherlands, Brazil, Germany and Slovakia.
