Discover why Loretto's Academy is the benchmark for golf in UK schools
By Dean Halford, Director of Golf - Admissions & Marketing at Loretto School in Musselburgh, East Lothian, Scotland
When people ask me what makes Loretto’s Golf Academy different, the answer is simple - we don’t give golf lessons; we give a golf education. That distinction shapes everything we do, from the way we coach to the way we support pupils in the classroom, on the course and in their day-to-day school life.
A Joined-Up Approach From Day One

We’ve built an Academy where golf development and academic progress sit comfortably side by side. Our team of full-time, PGA professional coaches work on campus every day, which means communication with the Academic Team happens naturally. We see the pupils as often in the dining hall and corridors as we do on the range. That daily presence allows us to understand each pupil as a whole, not just as a golfer.
This joined-up approach begins in the Junior School and continues seamlessly through to Upper Sixth. As pupils move into the Senior School, their opportunities grow. They have after-school access, dedicated Golf sessions within Games time twice a week, and study periods for those in our High-Performance Programme. For those players who wish to pursue a career in golf, the game can be part of life seven days a week. And with Musselburgh Links - the oldest course in the world - just a sand wedge from campus, many of them choose exactly that.
We run three squads: Performance, Development and Club/Under 15. This allows us to tailor coaching for every ambition. Yes, we’re a performance academy, and proud of our record, but we’re equally committed to being inclusive. Our Academy is for every Lorettonian who loves the game, whether they dream of playing professionally or simply want to play socially.
Each Golf Academy pupil also becomes a member of Musselburgh Old Course, and in the Summer Term they can head out for a round immediately after school. It’s hard not to progress your game when this is your backyard.
Technology & Expertise That Support Every Player

Modern golfing excellence requires more than a good swing, and we don’t leave progress to chance. Every pupil’s development is tracked using high-quality data and analysis, shared openly with parents, guardians and any home coaches. This transparency means we can work together around each young golfer, ensuring they feel supported from all sides.
We use a full suite of cutting-edge tools to monitor technique, physical movement and performance trends over time. TrackMan, GC3, SAM Putt Lab, K-Vest and CoachNow form the backbone of our daily work, and the Player Development Index (PDI) platform sits across it all. PDI is widely used by US Universities during their recruitment process, so it gives our pupils an advantage when exploring college Golf Scholarships.
We strengthen this further by bringing in external experts such as Sports Psychologists, Nutritionists, Strength and Conditioning Coaches, and Performance Analysts. These workshops help pupils understand every element of performance and give them the tools to take ownership of their own development.
Alongside this, our coaching team brings a depth of experience that sets our programme apart. Daniel Moos, one of our full-time PGA professionals, is the youngest fully qualified PGA member in the UK - a reflection of the ambition and expertise that drives the Academy forward.
World-Class Facilities

Our location on Scotland’s Golf Coast is a key reason families choose Loretto. With courses such as Gullane, Muirfield, Longniddry, Monktonhall and Craigielaw close by, pupils experience some of the most historic and challenging Golf in the world.
Our on-campus, purpose-built indoor centre provides year-round training, including:
- A short-game area with a large undulating green
- A perfectly flat putting surface with SAM Putt Lab
- Four hitting nets with TrackMan and GC3
- A teaching studio
- Classrooms for theory and analysis
- A TPI-driven warm-up room and fitness suite
- Our own, subsidised golf shop offering equipment from Glenmuir, Titleist and LAB Putters
This combination of Scotland’s most iconic links and cutting-edge indoor facilities gives our pupils a training environment that is genuinely hard to find anywhere else.
Pathways, Competitions & Successes
We run our own World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR)-accredited series - the Loretto Junior Golf Tour - which gives pupils the chance to earn WAGR and European ranking points on home soil. It’s a significant advantage for those targeting US College Golf.
We’ve won national titles 14 times at U15 and U18 level, and many pupils represent their countries during their time at Loretto. In my first ten days at the Academy, a pupil broke a course record. It’s a rare thing to witness, and it showed me immediately the level of motivation and energy already here.
The Life Skills That Matter Most

Golf is one of the best teachers a young person can have. Through our philosophy and culture, pupils learn respect, resilience, focus, tenacity and how to communicate well. They learn to manage time, handle pressure and deal with success and disappointment in equal measure.
Most importantly, they learn confidence. We celebrate success together and share setbacks together. Pupils take ownership of their journey, support one another and often take on peer-leadership roles. It creates a community where every young golfer can reach their true potential.
A Standard We Are Proud to Set
Loretto’s Golf Academy stands at the forefront of school Golf in the UK not because of one extraordinary thing, but because of the combination of many - experienced coaches, world-class facilities, historic surroundings, strong academic foundations and a philosophy that places the whole pupil at the centre.
We don’t just develop talented golfers. We help young people grow into confident, capable individuals who are ready for whatever comes next - whether that’s elite sport, US College Golf or simply a lifelong love of the game.

The Loretto Golf Academy Way
This is the story we want to tell prospective pupils and their families
Imagine this. You’re standing on the final shot of the day on the world’s oldest golf course - Musselburgh Links - just a sand wedge from your school. The sun dips low over Scotland’s Golf Coast, turning everything gold. Your teammates gather behind you, quiet but buzzing, willing the ball home. You breathe, settle and swing.
This isn’t just another round.
This is where you train.
This is where you grow.
This is the Loretto way.
At Loretto, you’re not just learning to play golf - you’re receiving a complete golf education shaped by kindness, integrity, loyalty and tenacity. You feel it in the daily presence of PGA-qualified coaches who know you as well in the dining hall as they do on the range. You feel it in the friendships that form on fairways and in classrooms, and in the community that lifts you, shapes you and believes in you.
You belong here.
Our world-class indoor facilities sit just steps from your classroom, and historic links courses form your backyard. Here, your development is tracked, supported and celebrated. Every shot, every choice, every challenge becomes part of your journey - shared openly with your family and the coaches who walk each step beside you.
And then there’s something no other school in the UK gives you: a WAGR-accredited tour - the Loretto Junior Golf Tour. A pathway that opens doors to US universities, performance programmes and global competition, right here at home.
This is more than coaching.
More than opportunity.
More than tradition.
This is where young golfers find their voice, their confidence, and their future - on and off the course.
