The best new drivers for high handicap golfers

How you play off the tee will set the foundation for your round. We may dream of being short game mavericks who can escape from anywhere and post a credible score from the trees, but the reality is that hitting more fairways is essential to consistently putting together better results for the overwhelming majority of golfers out there.

It's why the manufacturers place so much emphasis on creating highly forgiving drivers that will help to reduce your biggest misses, assist you with getting the ball into the air, and potentially even add a few yards to your average tee shots. Having the right driver in hand - the one that is most suitable for your ability - could be the first step in producing better golf and enjoying this game even more.

Golfshake's Equipment Expert Ryan Rastall has tested a wide variety of drivers in recent months, including those models that provide heightened forgiveness that will generally be targeted towards higher handicappers and those with slower swing speeds, although a greater range of golfers may find benefits from deploying this sort of driver, rather than those marketed for lower handicap players, which is why being custom fitted always comes recommended.

What are the standouts for 2026? Ryan has chosen a handful of drivers that most impressed him, that are likely to see you hit more fairways and that can keep you in play more often off the tee, which is a platform to shoot lower scores and improve your experience on the golf course.

Featuring his insights and full testing recaps, you can watch his latest video below, and don't forget to see what he said about the best game improvement irons too!

The Most Forgiving Drivers of 2026

Having seen Ryan's selections and his thinking behind them, let's now take a closer glance at what you can expect from each of the famous five that he's showcased as being his favourites in this category for 2026.

Callaway Quantum Max

Callaway Quantum Max

Ryan first takes a look at the Quantum Max from Callaway, which, like the others in this family, presents the revolutionary Tri-Force Face that offers exceptional speed and distance. Explaining this piece of tech, it has successfully layered three materials - Titanium, Poly Mesh, and Carbon Fiber - into a system that produces impressive yardages. You can also take advantage of the Ai-Optimised face mapping, utilise the superb adjustability, and enjoy the confidence-inspiring profile of this driver.

What Ryan Says: "As well as being extremely forgiving, it's also really low spin, so if you're that player who generates tons of spin, this could be the model for you if you want some forgiveness as well. The Tri-Force Face is also really quick, really robust, and also gives you good spin wherever you hit it across the face too. You're tending to hit a lot of fairways with this, the ball speeds are brilliant, but it's going to knock that spin down for you really nicely. This is one that I really, really enjoyed hitting."

PING G440 K

PING G440 K

The brand has described this as their straightest and most forgiving driver yet. And who are we to argue? Weight savings from the carbon crown and sole in the G440 K have been re-allocated within this design, mostly through a high-density tungsten back weight that has driven the CG lower and deeper to promote faster ball speeds.

What Ryan Says: "It has this 42 gram backweight, stretching that weight really far away from the face, making it exceptionally forgiving. Again, you can hit this pretty much anywhere you like on the face and you're going to get pretty good ball speed and pretty decent downrange dispersion as well. This is probably one of the straightest drivers out there on the market."

TaylorMade Qi4D Max

TaylorMade Qi4D Max

Ryan was a huge fan of this. The collar of the Qi4D Max consists of forged and machined aircraft-grade 7075 aluminium that has ensured that golfers will have tremendous adjustability within a high MOI head without giving up speed. This is TaylorMade's first Max driver with TAS weights, meaning that the Qi4D Max boasts two moveable TAS weights (13g and 4g) that means you can tailor the flight and spin to your individual preference. Placing the 13g closer to the face provides faster ball speeds while placing it in the back enhances stability and forgiveness.

What Ryan Says: "This was a driver that literally was so difficult to hit off-line. You could hit this thing anywhere, you could chop across it, you can try and put a hook on it, and this thing just comes out with some decent launch, decent spin and goes very, very straight. It's definitely one of the most forgiving drivers TaylorMade have ever released and will suit a hell of  a lot of golfers."

COBRA OPTM MAX-D

Cobra OPTM Max

Golfers who put one of these drivers in their bag will feel the benefits of POI (Product of Inertia) Shaping, Adaptive POI Weighting, H.O.T. Face and FUTUREFIT33, with there being a significant focus on enhanced forgiveness within this range, with the MAX-D being engineered for maximum draw bias.

What Ryan Says: "I really enjoyed hitting this for a number of reasons. It was pretty robust with the spin across the face. It wasn't as high spin as the MAX-K so it did control that quite nicely for you. But it was really easy to launch, it got up in the air easily, for those of you that do have that slice as well, that MAX draw tendency to the head and also to the way it's weighted will ensure that this driver really goes straight for you and that you're going to hit loads of fairways. It's a little higher launching than some of the others on this list, but that could be really good for you."

Wilson DYNAPWR Max+

Wilson DYNAPWR Max+

Given how much he values Wilson's clubs, there is no shock that Ryan has given the edge to DYNAPWR Max+ - which is the straightest and most forgiving driver that this historic manufacturer has produced yet. What has made this club so forgiving is that it delivers a higher moment of inertia (MOI) than ever before, surpassing the 10K MOI mark, which was previously the established high point. This means the clubhead has greater stability at impact, ensuring straighter tee shots and leading to a more consistent ball flight for those who don't always hit the sweet spot. The driver is also fully adjustable, featuring a six-way adjustable hosel and an adjustable rear weight, meaning that you can refine spin and launch conditions for your own game.

What Ryan Says: "I've saved what I consider to be the best till last. I got to hit this in September/October last year and literally, on the range there at Close House, it was awesome, I could hit this anywhere on the face, and it came out with a nice, couple of yard cut on it most of the time. I just think it's brilliant. It kind of does everything you want a high MOI driver to do for a better player and a higher clubhead speed player, as generally in this most forgiving space, they tend to spin a lot, launch really high, so you're having to loft drivers really down a lot if you want to make the most of this forgiveness story, but I have not found that in this driver at all, I've got it in the same 9-degree that I had in the Carbon driver that was out previously, and it outperforms that, I think, quite nicely, it's not as long, but I hit a lot more fairways with this and it's right up there distance wise with your Callaways and TaylorMades out there too. That's why this had to be my number one on the list of the most forgiving drivers of 2026."

Which of these drivers are you most likely to try or buy this year? Perhaps you have already had a go and either agree or disagree with Ryan's thoughts.

Regardless, if you are someone who struggles off the tee and is in the market for a new driver, you can't go wrong with making any of these clubs your next most valuable companion on the golf course.
