Padraig Harrington Joins Elite List of Golfers

Padraig Harrington joined an elite club after becoming just the fifth golfer to have won both The Open and Senior Open, following his triumph in the over-50s major at Sunningdale

Winning by three shots ahead of Thomas Bjorn and fellow past Open champion Justin Leonard, the Irishman posted a final round of 67 to etch his place alongside Darren Clarke, Tom Watson, Gary Player and Bob Charles as players who have lifted both the Claret Jug and its senior equivalent.

"I'm thrilled to have won but very satisfied that I've won a Senior Open with my two Opens," Harrington said. "The fact that only five people have ever done it is quite special. I'm quite proud that I've managed to survive this long in the game."

The 53-year-old also claimed the US Senior Open for a second time in June, meaning that he now has a trio of senior majors to sit alongside his three regular major championships to complete another milestone in what has been a remarkable career.

Few players display the enthusiasm and passion for this game that Harrington does, and that energy has carried him into what has been a notable senior career that has accompanied what was an already significant legacy.

Reflecting on his achievements some years ago, Harrington said: "For as long as we go on there will be an Open Championship and my name will be on that trophy. It's far more than I ever believed I could have done. I have definitely over-achieved in this game, but you know, I'm content with that now and will enjoy it for the rest of my years."

There is an appealing modesty to Harrington, who continues to represent the Wilson Golf brand with distinction, but his triumphs have been born from gritty determination, a love of competing, and an infectious work ethic that has carried him far beyond the norm in the sport.

Having been twice Champion Golfer of the Year - alongside a PGA Championship and numerous Ryder Cup victories - his place in the game was long secure before his 50th birthday, but this latest chapter has taken Harrington to another level, with the promise that there could yet be more to come.

Being a proud ambassador for Wilson, Harrington deployed their renowned irons and wedges during his newest glorious moment in Berkshire.

This is what you need to know about those clubs.

Staff Model RB Utility Iron (4*)

Harrington played a key role in the development of the club, designed to bridge the performance gap between a player’s longest iron and shortest fairway wood. Engineered with a sleek, refined topline to appeal to better players, the club's visual elegance is matched by its performance benefits. Wilson engineers strategically redistributed weight toward the toe and sole, producing a mid-to-low centre of gravity that enhances forgiveness, playability, and effortless power.

The club's hollow body construction further optimises weight distribution, directly contributing to increased ball speeds, improved shot shaping, and enhanced aerodynamic performance. Internally, strategically positioned rib structures (RB technology) reinforce stability on off-centre strikes while simultaneously fine-tuning acoustics for a more satisfying sound and feel.

Staff Model CB Irons (5-9)

The Staff Model CB irons offer accomplished golfers with a confidence-inspiring look at address, coupled with the added forgiveness of a cavity-back iron.

Developed in conjunction with the Staff Model Blades, the CB also includes Precise Toe Weighting and a Fluid Feel Hosel, engineered to meet the high-performance standards expected by Tour-level players. Designed with speed and precision in mind, the sleek construction of these irons caters to golfers seeking increased forgiveness in their longer clubs. The soft Forged 8620 Carbon Steel ensures ultimate feedback, allowing players to skilfully work the ball in both directions.

Staff Model ZM Wedges (52* & 58*) & Staff Model High Toe Wedge (64*)

Based on feedback from its leading Tour players, the Staff Model wedges offer golfers of varying skill levels the ultimate versatility when approaching or playing around the green.

The Staff Model ZM wedges incorporate a new ZM high-spin precision-milled groove pattern combined with Garnet Face Blasting to ensure a faster, deeper and longer ball interaction. This results in higher consistent spin and check control in all weather conditions.

Designed with the same game-changing characteristics as the ZM, the Staff Model ZM HT incorporates a high toe and wide sole construction, providing the ultimate flexibility golfers demand with shot saving in mind. The deeper precision groove pattern runs across the full face for added control, while providing the same consistent spin control players need.
