ProQuip PX8 StormForce Rain Jacket, Helm Quilt Jacket, Zerofit Base Layer Review

ProQuip is the Scottish-based specialist in waterproof golfing gear best known as the supplier to Ryder Cup squads.

More than 20 teams from both sides of the Atlantic have sported the brand over the years, so they are obviously well regarded by the top pros as well as the thousands of amateurs who seek affordable quality.

The company started business in 1981 producing the classic golfing rainsuit - a waterproof jacket and over-trousers - but has since expanded its range to encompass the full works of essential winterwear for men, women and juniors.

Featured Content

This includes everything from cosy baselayers, polos, mid layers, knitwear, down-filled windproofs, to a wide range of accessories such as hats, gloves, socks and snoods.

Now that winter is coming we tested a selection of items from the range to see if they lived up to the hype.

PX8 StormForce Rain Jacket (RRP: £180) & Trousers (RRP: £100)

ProQuip Rain Jacket

New for the 2024-25 season, these top of the range waterproofs are extremely lightweight and look great. They feel really soft resulting in a noise free swing, which is not hindered in the slightest by the fabric’s four-way stretch. Both jacket and trousers function perfectly well in the rain, with adjustable cuff and hem tabs ensuring water doesn’t creep up the inside. My only gripe with golf waterproof jackets in general - and this applies not just to ProQuip - is that they don’t offer a hooded option which would make perfect sense to me.

I like the jacket’s blue and grey colour way on the testing sample and the white flashing adds to a modern appearance. Being light and crease resistant, the jacket and trousers fit in your bag without straining the pocket zips. The trousers, available only in black, are comfortable and benefit from belt loops making them much more versatile.

Helm Quilt Jacket (RRP: £100)

ProQuip Helm Jacket

Also new for winter 2024-25 is this very smart looking windproof jacket with quilted panels in the body coupled with a heat sealed jersey fabric shell designed to keep golfers warm without weighing them down or hindering their swing.

Our sample is again in blue and complements the StormForce rain jacket perfectly so players can be warm and dry in the worst of winters.

It feels incredibly soft and lightweight, yet it functions very well in the testing and continual stiff breeze at Hallamshire, my home course. The Helm jacket is available with a hooded option.

Zerofit Ultimate Base Layer (RRP: £60)

Zerofit Base Layer

ProQuip is an exclusive distributor of Zerofit products from the Japanese sports technology company that claims to produce "the world’s warmest baselayers."

The long sleeved Ultimate baselayer is the golfers’ choice and the claim is that it produces five times more heat than the traditional compression baselayers that were the rage a couple of decades ago and still popular today.

They are available in various colours and feel as light as a feather. The fabric, which claims to produce heat in response to body movement rather than compression capillary action, has a soft, unusual texture.

I can’t vouch for its efficiency on the course yet - it’s been surprisingly mild for a British autumn - but I’ve tested it indoors with the heating switched off (much to my wife’s displeasure) and can confirm it is very comfortable and warm.

It does fit rather tightly, especially if your midriff is bigger than it should be, so it is wise to try a size larger than you might normally.

Detailing is nice, there is a logo on the roll collar, and it has a luxury feel to it.

This is an ideal baselayer, suitable for all types of outdoor pursuits, and feels incredibly comforting to wear over the winter months.

Verdict

The ProQuip range can be praised for its affordable practicability which also looks very stylish. The kit is certainly eye-catching - I received a number of compliments for their looks during testing. It would have been nice if the RainForce trousers were available in navy to match the blue sample jacket, but that is a mere quibble.

The range also suits the layering concept, allowing golfers to keep as warm and dry as required, while allowing for an unhindered range of movement throughout the swing.

The price point is spot on for golfers seeking value for money without compromising performance.

Remember - winter is just around the corner - so now is the time to review your winter golfing kit to ensure it is up to scratch. If you need any replacements, the ProQuip range should be on your shortlist.

And to ensure that you're ready for the winter season, we recommend that you check out the ProQuip Winter Golf Accessories Bundle (£65), featuring a bobble hat, waterproof bucket hat and thermal mittens, in addition to the Zerofit Winter Golf Bundle (£115) that offers the Ultimate Base Layer, the Move Base Layer, a thermal bobble hat, and snood.
