Do You Remember These Classic BMW PGA Championships

By: | Mon 16 Sep 2024

This week marks 20 years of sponsorship of the DP World Tour’s flagship event by BMW - and it has been quite a ride.

2006

David Howell cruised to victory by five shots, becoming the first English winner since Nick Faldo in 1989.

2008

The one and only Miguel Angel Jimenez brought the house down with a hole-in-one at the fifth hole before beating Oliver Wilson on the second extra hole to take the title.

2010

South African golf legend, Ernie Els caused a huge stir with his redesign of the course at Wentworth. It was unpopular with the players, to say the very least. But there were no complaints from Simon Khan, who enjoyed his first victory

2011 & 2012

With an astonishing performance, England’s Luke Donald beats fellow countryman Lee Westwood at the 2011 championship and takes the top spot as world number one for the first time in his career. Donald went on to defend his title in 2012, becoming only the third player to do so after Colin Montgomerie and Sir Nick Faldo.

2013

Italy’s Matteo Manassero becomes the tournament’s youngest-ever winner, taking home the trophy at just 20 years of age.

2014

Rory McIlroy secures victory after a dramatic final round, overturning a seven-shot deficit to shoot a 66 on the final day and clinch a thrilling victory. His first win on British soil kick-started a memorable year for the world number one, in which he also won The Open and US PGA Championship.

2015

Finishing with a record-breaking 21-under-par, South Korean, Byeong-Hun An - a European Tour rookie - claims victory. A remarkable five aces are recorded throughout this tournament, making it a memorable event for such a rare achievement.

2017

Alex Noren starts the final round seven shots off the lead and shot a fabulous 62 to beat Francesco Molinari by two shots.

2019

Danny Willett memorably took advantage of Jordan Spieth’s collapse to win The Masters in 2016 and his career then went into freefall. He won the DP World Tour Championship from nowhere in 2018 and the following year completed an emotional victory at Wentworth. Ross Fisher also grabbed the headlines with an albatross at the 18th.
