Golf And Culture Combines in Magical Madeira

By: Golfshake Editor | Mon 17 Oct 2022

Golfers who are experiencing the magic of Madeira can also enjoy a series of cultural events across the destination this autumn, something that further enhances its status as a paradise for holidaymakers.

The Portuguese archipelago is also steeped in historical and cultural heritage dating back seven centuries. As the vibrant summer season comes to a close, tourists can explore a new side of Madeira in an eclectic assortment of events that celebrate the resort’s unique traditions.

The autumn commenced with the popular Nature Festival, which fused incomparable Madeira scenery with high-octane thrills and stretched from October 4-9.

Alternatively, golfers can try their hand at mountain biking, surfing or canyoning, all to the backdrop of one of the jewels of the Atlantic. These activities offer an enthralling way to connect with Madeira nature, including the Laurissilva forest (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999). There’s something for everyone - including those who just want to relax after a perfect day on the course and enjoy a picturesque sunset.

Another unmissable Madeira event is the Chestnut Festival, centred around the enchanting parish of Curral das Freiras. This annual celebration introduces tourists to the various delicacies that can be made with this versatile fruit, simultaneously putting a selection of outstanding local restaurants in the spotlight. This year’s festival is set to come to the island on October 31 and November 1, further elevating a culinary scene already held in high regard.

In addition, Madeira is also the stage of a thriving sporting calendar, with one highlight this autumn sure to be the 2022 Biathle-Triathle World Championships. Taking place in the beautiful Machico Bay from October 26-31, hundreds of top-level athletes from across the globe will compete in a mixture of swimming, running and laser shooting in what promises to be a thrilling contest.

Completing the line-up is a catalogue of events including the breath-taking torchlit procession of Nosso Sr.º dos Milagres, as well as the Nomad Island Fest to kick off December.

Meanwhile, the sporting diary continues with Madeira SwimRun Portugal and the Golden Trail World Series, which challenges participants to run 100km through Madeira’s natural beauty.

Why Madeira is a Special Destination For Golf
