LIV Golf Invitational Portland - What You Need to Know

By: | Mon 27 Jun 2022

THE second LIV Series gets under way at Pumpkin Ridge this week. The inaugural event was something of a “who’s that?” tournament but the field this time is a whole lot stronger.

The likes of Bryson DeChambeau, his good friend Brooks Koepka, Abraham Ancer, Patrick Reed and Pat Perez will be teeing it up alongside the likes of Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Phil Mickelson and Charl Schwartzel, winner of the inaugural event at Centurion, for the latest 54-hole event.

To put the strength of the field into some kind of perspective, between them the 48 competitors include the winners of nine of the past 21 majors, four former world No. 1 players and nearly half are currently ranked in the top 100. Seven are ranked in the top 40.

It also includes Yuki Inamori, a four-time winner on Japanese tours with 39 top-10 finishes as a professional.

They will compete for a total prize fund of $25m, and the organisers will be hoping tat the standard of golf is rather better than we witnessed at Centurion, when the vast majority of the field finished their three rounds over par.

This is how LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman sees it: “Coming off our successful launch in London, we take another leap forward with our strengthened field for Portland.

"Record-setting champions, global ambassadors and rising stars are showing that players are eager to get involved with our innovative model that stresses camaraderie, competition, and above all, fun, that drives a new and entertaining product for today’s golf fans. The response after one event has been overwhelming.

"Free agency has officially come to golf. I’m proud of this field and our entire team that is committed to creating a new and exciting future for this sport.”

The 48-man field in Portland will play in 12 teams of four players. Teams will be announced after a draft during which team captains will select players. No matter what you may think of LIV Golf, it has to be said that the team element is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

Once again, live coverage will be available on LIVGolf.com, YouTube and Facebook, and the organisers will be hoping that the gremlins that bedevilled the Centurion event have been removed.

The Course

Designed by Robert Cupp and opened in 1992, Pumpkin Ridge is a par 72 measuring 7,017 yards. It was built on rolling terrain and features tree-lined fairways, large greens and lots of water hazards.

Form Guide

It is difficult to predict who is going to win at Pumpkin Ridge because so many of the players have had little competitive action recently. Schwartzel won the first tournament in England but Pumpkin Ridge is an entirely different sort of golf course. There will be a lot of attention on Bryson DeChambeau but he has spent much of 2022 recovering from injury. Brooks Koepka is the latest high-profile defector but he has also spent much of the season struggling with a series off niggling injuries, and his form has been far from impressive.

To Win:

Patrick Reed. Would be typical of him to win on his first LIV outing

Each Way:

Abraham Ancer. A consistent performer

Each Way:

Pat Perez. Attacking style should suit this course

Five to Follow:

Patrick Reed. Love him or hate him, it’s hard to ignore him

Abraham Ancer. Will surely be there or thereabouts

Pat Perez. Always entertaining to watch

Yuki Inamor. Knows how to get the job done

Brooks Koepka. Will settle for finishing ahead of DeChambeau
