Get to Know Xander Schauffele - Stats & What's in His Golf Bag

By: | Mon 27 Jun 2022

XANDER SCHAUFFELE won the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands after rookie Sahith Theegala suffered a nightmare on the final hole.

Schauffele had been three shots ahead before stumbling during the final round, but held on for his second win of the season.

The American, who entered the day with a one-shot lead over Patrick Cantlay, posted a final-round 68 to take the win in Connecticut.

Theegala took the solo lead after a birdie on the 17th, his third in five holes. But then it all went wrong at the final hole.

He drove his ball into a fairway bunker and was horrified when he got to it and realised it was right under the lip. He was unable to escape and then played out well short of the green. His bogey putt lipped out, leaving him with a double bogey and one back of Schauffele.

Schauffele, meanwhile, had hit a perfect drive on the final hole right behind him. He then stuck his approach just a few feet from the cup, which set up his final birdie of the day to take the two-shot win.

Schauffele ended the week at 19-under after his 2-under 68 on Sunday. He's now won for the first time in five tries in his career after holding a 54-hole lead. The win was also his first solo victory on Tour since the 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions.

It turned out to be another what if week for Rory McIlroy. He opened with a scintillating 62 and finished with a 67. In between were a 70 that included a quadruple bogey and a double bogey, and a 72 that included another double bogey. On the positive side, he made 23 birdies in 72 holes.

Who is Xander Schauffele?

Schauffele was born in San Diego in October 1993.

He has won six times on the PGA Tour and once on the DP World Tour, and he is the Olympic champion. He is of German descent and his grandfathers both played football at a high level.

He turned professional in 2015 and qualified for the Web.com Tour in 2016, earning his PGA Tour card by finishing 15th in the money list. He finished fifth in his first US Open in 2017 and three weeks later won the Greenbrier Classic. He also won the Tour Championship that year, the first rookie to do so.

He made his Presidents Cup debut in 2019  and his Ryder Cup debut two years later. He has finished tied second at both The Open and The Masters and tied third at the US Open.

He began the week ranked 20th in the FedEx Cup standings and 15th in the world rankings. He averages 307.6 yards off the tee and finds 63.40% of fairways and finds 69.07% of greens in regulation. Schauffele averages 28.61 putts per round and gets up and down from the sand 67.21% of the time. He averages 4.38 birdies per round.
