Golfshake North vs South 2010

The Abbey Golf Hotel and Spa near Redditch was the fitting venue for the 2010 Golfshake.com North vs South team match play event.

80 players took part for their respective teams off a 2 tee start early on Monday 12th April.  The Captains led the way in front of all the players and got away in what was set to be a tough and competitive match. What followed was a grueling 4 and a half hours for each team of intense match play pressure.  Whilst all had an enjoyable time and a great day, the golf was highly competitive with a lot at stake and the North out to regain the trophy. Tim Hawkins playing with Captain Martin Millichip commented 'That was probably the most intense (and quietest!) match I've ever played' which says it all.

With 12 of the 20 matches still being decided on the 17th hole the Abbey proved to be a fitting test for those taking part and a grueling test of matchplay golf.

The result was decided by the 16th group after Tim Buffham and Paul Heath halved the match over Tim Greaves and Jan Burroughs which saw the North gain the half point needed to move to 10.5 points to regain the title.

The North finished out right winners by 12.5 points to 10.5 points on a day enjoyed by all.

After the match David Ley, South team Captain commented 'I'm genuinely happy for my opposing Captain, Martin. I think their win was deserved he led by example by winning his match and his team followed. I'm extremely proud of my team who gave their all and put up a valiant defense of the event.'

Martin Millichip said afterwards 'It was an honour and a privilege to be asked to be this years Captain and what made it more special was that I was going up against my friend Dave Ley as the opposing skipper. I always felt we had a strong team, as did the South, and I knew that the result would be very close but I was confident that we could wrestle the trophy back from Southern hands.'
