What the club says: Built in the late 1970's the Abbey course has now matured into a fine, championship standard parkland course measuring over 6,500 yards. Designed by Donald Steel, one of Britain's leading course architects the course has been extensively upgraded and lengthened in recent years.
The layout includes matured trees, lakes and on the whole the fairways are wide with the rough not too punishing, the picturesque 7th is a 192 yard drive from the medal tee with the green surrounded on three sides by the river arrow. The 13th is a challenging uphill par 4 drive between two mature oak trees at 250 yards with the green concealed out of sight at the top of the hill.

I played the same day as the previous reviewer, yes the course was busy as it was the members captain\'s charity day and I think there were also a lot of Golf groups from the hotel. Peak price to play this course is £35. The price on teeofftimes on this particular afternoon was £14! Course is superb condition and helpful pro Shop staff warned us about how busy it was.. The driving range there is the best around. We took our time and enjoyed our round. At 14 quid, great value as the pro said, the slower round was reflected in the price. Sounds like the high handicap previous reviewer wanted great fast Golf at municipal prices! We will definitely be back. - Aug 10 2014

Cracking test of golf
Never been disappointed playing The Abbey...it is a great test of golf. One guy i spoke to today is a member at Stratford Oaks and was v excited about winning a comp to play a 4 ball at The Abbey today. no 2 holes are the same - no boring up and down fairways at the Abbey. There are only 2 holes where if you miss the fairway you are on another fairway to play from (12 & 13) and (11&16) everywhere else you are in deep trouble for missing the fairway (like Jordan Spieth's wild tee shot on the 13th on last day of the Open!). Be straight or beware!
Final testament - the player behind me this evening was only one of the greenkeepers / groundsmen! Talk about taking your own medicine!?

Golf Course Reviews for Abbey Hotel Golf Club
Course is drying out and fairways firming up. Essentially all greens are open (only once have I seen temps in 6 years of playing). And the greens are in good condition! Though some fairways are a bit wet.
Course was in great condition for the time of year. Greens were smooth and running true. Not a course that you can take out the big dog on every hole, playing for position off the tee is essential to make a good score.
