Paul Lawrie Adds Major Class to European Legends Championship at Trevose

By: Golfshake Editor | Mon 18 Mar 2019

The Staysure (European Senior) Tour heads to Trevose Golf & Country Club this summer for the inaugural Farmfoods European Links Championship, and the event has been boosted by the news that former Open champion Paul Lawrie will be part of the field in Cornwall.

The Scottish professional is best known for winning The Open in 1999 and will join other stars of the Staysure Tour for the event that takes place between 20–23 June.

This announcement comes of the back of the exciting news that golfing icon and winner of the 1991 Masters, Ian Woosnam OBE, has agreed to be the event’s official host.

2019 marks Paul’s debut year on the Staysure Tour and he is hoping his time on the tour will bring him even more success. His career to date has seen him win eight European Tour titles but it was in 1999 that he really found his feet in the game.

Overcoming Justin Leonard and Jean van de Velde in a play-off, his Open Championship victory saw Paul’s career go from strength to strength. Other highlights include being a member of Europe’s Ryder Cup team on two occasions in 1999 and most famously at the ‘Miracle of Medinah’ in 2012.

Paul is delighted to be playing in this year’s Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship, the first year the event will take place.

“I can’t wait to play in this year’s championship. The event looks set to be one of the highlights of this year’s Staysure Tour and I’m looking forward to taking on the challenge.

“Farmfoods are also my personal sponsors and it is great to see them continue to get involved with golfing events on the tour. With Ian acting as event host I’m really looking forward to seeing many other high-profile players signing up to play in the Championship in the coming weeks.

“The fact the event is taking place on a Links course was also a big positive for me. It’s a style of golf I love to play and I’ve heard a lot of positive things about the Trevose course.”

The tournament is set to be organised by brand agency Champions (UK) plc and their director of sport Tim Munton said:

“We are thrilled that Paul Lawrie OBE will be playing at this year’s tournament. He is one of Britain’s biggest golfing stars and his win at the Open in 1999 has gone down in sporting history. Along with Ian as the event host, it is great to have two major champions committed already for the inaugural Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship”

Head of the Staysure Tour David MacLaren said: “Both Paul and the Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship are making their debut on the Staysure Tour this year and both additions are sure to provide the tour with a boost. I can’t wait to see Paul in action at Trevose. He is a hugely experienced player who has achieved so much in the game and the fact he will be taking part in the event demonstrates the high quality of action we expect to see at the event.”

With a total prize fund of €200,000 and a first prize of €50,000 for the winner, this year’s event is sure to be fiercely competitive and FREE tickets for the championship are available.
