Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm Produce Magic on 16th at Augusta
Rory McIlroy's quest for history looked to have been derailed early into the 81st Masters Tournament, with his normally reliable long game letting him down in the blustery conditions at Augusta National. However, the four-time major champion, attempting to complete the Career Grand Slam this week, made a succession of superb recoveries from around the greens, holing crucial putts, before his imperious iron play returned, eventually seeing the Northern Irishman salvage a 72.
In previous years, it was a round that could have been a 76 or 77 for McIlroy, but he admirably held things together, before unleashing moments of magic, including a near hole-in-one on the 16th hole. Playing alongside imperious rookie Jon Rahm from Spain, the two Europeans (a future Ryder Cup duo?) became engaged in their own mini-contest on the par three.
