Lexi Thompson Partners Bryson DeChambeau at Franklin Templeton Shootout

By: Golfshake Editor | Mon 05 Dec 2016

Post by Sports Writer Derek Clements

When an invitation to the Franklin Templeton Shootout pops through your letterbox, you know you have arrived. And if you happen to be married, your wife rubs her hands with glee, knowing she is heading off with you to Tiburon Golf Club at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples, Florida, where she will eat great food, be spoilt for five or six days and get the chance to spend some of the money you are about to earn for taking part in an event that nobody takes very seriously.

And that is as it should be.

The field comprises 12 two-man teams or, more accurately, 11 two-man teams and one two-person team. Between them they have enjoyed 112 career PGA Tour career wins and seven LPGA Tour successes. Bryson DeChambeau is one of the few players in the field without a victory to his name but his partner, Lexi Thompson has won seven times, even though she is still only 21. Thompson is only the second LPGA player in the tournament’s history to compete, joining Annika Sorenstam who played with Fred Couples in 2006.

Tournament host Greg Norman said: “Our goal when we started the tournament was to provide an annual event for Tour pros to get together at the end of the season and enjoy each other’s company while having fun out on the course. These teams will certainly reflect that type of atmosphere as they entertain the fans and television audience with some memorable golf.”

One player you don't normally associate with the word "fun" is Jason Dufner, who won last year in company with Brandt Snedeker. There may be only 12 teams, it may only be an exhibition event, but there is a mind-blowing $3.1m in prize money up for grabs. Dufner and Snedeker are one of four teams competing this year who have won the Franklin Templeton Shootout. Back together again are Harris English and Matt Kuchar, Sean O’Hair and Kenny Perry as well as Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker.

This year’s tournament will feature seven new teams and five repeat pairings. The most decorated returning team is English and Kuchar, the 2013 Shootout champions, who followed up their win with a runner-up finish in both 2014 and 2015.

The event features a different format each day - scramble, alternate shot and betterball.

The Teams taking part are:

Dufner and Snedeker, English and Kuchar, DeChambeau and Thompson, Sean O'Hair and Kenny Perry, Charles Howell and Rory Sabbatini, Kelly and Stricker, Jusin Thomas and Smylie Kaufman, Davis Love and Gary Woodland, Kevin Chappell and Kevin Kisner, Charley Hoffman and Billy Horschel, Daniel Berger and K.J. Choi, and Russell Knox and Luke Donald.
