Joy for Jones in Season Opening Gtour Event

By: Darren Ramowski | Tue 24 Apr 2012

Steven Jones Gtour Carden ParkGtour rookie Steven Jones, an 8 handicapper from Buckinghamshire wins at De Vere Carden Park on his 1st ever event.

The Nicklaus course at De Vere Carden Park hosted the 1st event of the 2012 Gtour – Race to Cyprus and On a day where the players were presented with every type of weather imaginable Steven Jones shot a steady 36 points to take the win on count back from Gtour regular Alan Redmond and fellow Gtour rookie Matt Dransfield.

“Before the event my goals were to relax and enjoy the day” Said Steven “however playing off a 3/4 handicap was always going to be tough so I set myself a target to score 32 to 36 points. I knew Playing along side my brother (Alun Jones) would be a great boost, but to win on my first time out is absolutely amazing.”

The assembled players didn’t allow the weather to get between them and their games with only 3 points separating the top 10. Twice Order of Merit Winner Shane Davies delivered another strong start to this his 4th season on tour placing 4th with fellow 2011 Race to Cyprus Grand Finalist Steve Howarth coming in 5th.

For Tournament Director Colin Astbury it was a welcome return to Carden Park and a great opener for the 2012 season “Its great to be back at this fantastic venue” Said Colin “the long drive in from the road with the panoramic views of the course and hotel really set the scene for an exiting event to come.  Despite the weather, the day went incredibly well with very little between the front runners, we were delighted to welcome so many newcomers to this event and to see our 1st rookie winner of the season.”

The Gtour – Race to Cyprus is the leading Amateur golf tour in the UK and unlike any other golf event is open to all golfers. With weekend events, Year long Order of Merit and no restriction on club or non club status The Gtour – Race to Cyprus provides a unique fun, social and competitive tour experience. Competing in at least 3 qualifying events around the UK the top 52 players will be invited to compete in the UK semi final in the Autumn at De Vere Belton Woods before the top 10 progress to Aphrodite Hills in January 2013.

Steven has now made his mark on the 2012 Order of Merit and something he will want to protect in the run up to the UK semi final in November but for now Steven can enjoy his win and his prize vouchers provided by long time Gtour Sponsor Bunker Mentality.

Steven added  ”I have wanted to play on the Gtour for the last couple of years but the timings haven’t worked for me.  The idea of playing different courses across the UK with the chance of a great prize at the end of the season has really appealed to me. Having now played in my 1st event I found the whole Gtour experience was excellent, from the warm and friendly welcome to the good course and fantastic prizes and I can’t wait for my next game with the Gtour.”
