15 Things You Didn't Know About The US Open

By: | Tue 13 Jun 2023

The 2023 US Open (10 Picks to Win + 10 Outsiders to Watch) is the 123rd playing of America's national championship, which means there is rather a lot of history behind the event!

Golfshake's Derek Clements has picked out some of his favourite facts and stats to give you a flavour of the US Open at its best.

The US Open was first played in 1895 as a 36-hole tournament and was won by Horace Rawlins, a 21-year-old Englishman, who received $150 from a prize fund of $335 and a gold medal.

John McDermott was the first American winner in 1911.

The winner of the US Open gains a five-year exemption for the sport’s four majors.

The field comprises 156 players.

Until 2017 if there was a tie the title was decided in an 18-hole playoff but is now decided in a two-hole playoff followed by sudden death if there is still a tie.

Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones and Willie Anderson won it a record times each.

Oakmont has staged it a record nine times.

Hale Irwin was the oldest champion at 45 years and 15 days in 1990.

The youngest winner was John McDermott, who was 19 years and 315 days old when he won in 1911.

Sam Snead was 61 when he made the cut in 1973.

Phil Mickelson has finished runner-upon a record six occasions.

Jack Nicklaus started a record 44 consecutive US Opens.

The record margin of victory in 15 by Tiger Woods in 2000.

The record low score for a single round is 63, shared by Johnny Miller, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf, Vijay Singh, Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood.

The youngest ever qualifier was 14-year-old Andy Zhang of China in 2012.
