Australian Team Wins on Home Soil at LIV Golf Adelaide

By: | Mon 29 Apr 2024

American Brendan Steele held off former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen for a one-shot victory at LIV Golf’s Adelaide tournament in front of a record crowd of 94,000.

Steele finished 18 under at the Grange Golf Club after firing a four-under 68 in Sunday’s final round for his first win since 2017.

He said: "It was utterly surreal. I am pretty overwhelmed. To win this tournament is really special. I cannot say enough good things about the fans and the golf course and the whole experience."

South Africa’s Oosthuizen had a bogey-free seven-under 65 to finish one behind. Former world number one Jon Rahm also threatened with an eagle and six birdies in a superb 64 but fell short.

Cameron Smith started the final round as the best-placed Australian at 11 under, but he had a bogey at the par-three third and struggled with his putter all day and had to settle for  a 70.

Compatriot Matt Jones started the tournament with a six-under 66 and then four-under 68. The 44-year-old got hot in a seven-hole stretch that reaped his four birdies for the day.

Marc Leishman carded a 65, while Lucas Herbert battled back after a one-over 73 on the opening day. Herbert shot a seven-under 65 on consecutive days.

While Smith missed out on the individual honours, the local favourite captained his all-Australian Ripper GC to a team victory on home soil. The Ripper foursome - Smith, Jones, Leishman, and Herbert - won on the second hole of a playoff, beating the all-South African Stingers GC, led by Oosthuizen, in the first teams playoff in LIV history.

Smith said: "This is unreal. It is a dream come true to win this on home soil."
