Meeting Former Ryder Cup Star Peter Dawson

By: Golfshake Editor | Mon 04 Nov 2019

Who was the first left-hander to play in the Ryder Cup? You could be forgiven for answering with Phil Mickelson, but in reality that distinction goes to England's Peter Dawson, who represented Great Britain & Ireland at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 1977.

The Yorkshireman was a 27-year-old rookie under captain Brian Huggett, securing one point for the home side in the singles over veteran American Don January, a major champion. Peter later drifted from the European Tour to become a golf director and PGA Master Professional across Europe, before enjoying some success on the Senior Tour in his 50s.

Playing in seven Open Championships, including being paired with Tom Watson at Turnberry, Peter has enjoyed a long and rich connection with the game. He has now deployed that expertise into a new book - entitled Now for the Back Nine - which has been designed to serve as a companion to the older, less supple golfer.

Recognising that the majority of golfers no longer possess the flexibility they once had, Peter, alongside friend, pupil, and author Simon Hawkins, has released an immaculately presented book that is packed with instruction, drills and tips that will benefit older players, but there is undoubtedly much for everyone to take away from the read.

Interspersed within the tuition are insights and anecdotes from Peter's life in the game, many of them humorous, making Now for the Back Nine both an informative and entertaining addition to your bookshelf.

Learning more about the philosophy behind the book and what you can expect from it, Golfshake's Kevin Paver recently met with Peter. You can watch that interview above.

Golfshake Ambassador Andrew Picken has read and written a full review of the book, which you can see here.

We also have these photos capturing Peter's career.
