What The Club Says
West Byfleet Golf Club was formed in 1922, but the course was originally laid down in 1904. The land was then owned by Mr Hugh Locke-King whose other extensive holdings included the famous 'Brooklands' race track. The members took the opportunity to purchase the course in 1922 and changed the name from Bleakdown to West Byfleet Golf Club thereby exhibiting both outstanding foresight and taste. The original course was designed by Cuthbert Butchart, a much respected professional of his time, whose projects included Worplesdon, West Hill, Hunstanton and Royal County Down. Although the odd hole has been lost and others changed, the majority of the course remains faithful to the original design. The course is mostly level with just the odd gradient to add some variation.

Good interesting course
Starting with the Clubhouse/food; Our society booking included coffee/tea and bacon rolls before our 18 holes, which were really good, and enough areas for us to be separate from a Surrey Past Captains Society also playing that day. After golf, we had sandwiches and chips, which the club had put on the previous year, and this was well received, so that ‘package’ was ordered again. Great selection of very fresh sandwiches, and very good chips, and plenty of both.Changing rooms were very tidy and certainly big enough for our group of 23, although obviously we were not all in there at the same time.
Pro shop seemed reasonably well stocked, but I didn’t check on the prices, except for £5 for a magnetic ball marker. There seemed to be a lot of ladies’ clothes, which is not usual at most clubs.
Staff were really good and very helpful and friendly. Greenkeeping staff were about but not obtrusive. We saw a number of robot grasscutters of various sizes, which are being brought into use, although the ground was so dry, there was little to no grass to cut!
On to the course, where the tees and greens were well watered and therefore green, although the greens had been allowed to be longer than usual, so were a little slow, but still consistent and running true. Some with wicked slopes. Fairways were very, very dry and hard as rock, so only the better players were picking the ball up clean off such tight lies. I visited a number of bunkers, and most had just a thin layer of sand in the bottom before striking harder compact sand, which made playing a proper bunker shot almost impossible.
The layout of the course is quite interesting, and although I read reports of noise from trains going by on one side, this was not too evident when I played. Pace of play was good – our society was made up of one 3 ball, and five 4 balls, and we all got round in reasonable time, and didn’t seem to be holding any groups up.
Overall, I liked the course and would hope that it will be not so dry next time I play, but I would recommend and will play again, probably in 2026.

Friendly check in . Talked us thru course set up and work that had been done.
Course was immaculate tee to green. Only gripe was the slow play. Waiting for 2 ball in front to finish their conversation every shot was annoying... not the clubs fault ! But members should be able to see they're causing a jam!
