What The Club Says

Royal St George’s is one of the world’s great courses. Having hosted Opens, PGA and Amateur Championships and Walker and Curtis Cups, it has been witness to more golfing history than any other in England. It was also the setting, in the guise of Royal St Mark’s, of golf’s most famous fictional match, the contest between James Bond and Goldfinger.

Designed by William Laidlaw Purves in 1887, it has constantly evolved to pose a tough test for championship and more modest players alike. In common with many links, it is characterised by humps and swales, dunes and wild rough, fast-running fairways and deep bunkers.

turf

The turf is excellent to strike balls from, even in Winter. Greens were pure and rolled fast and true. The fescue was cut back a lot this time of year which means it played much easier for us than it would in the summer with less ball searches required, so an acceptable pace of play too.

I absolutely loved the history and immaculate condition of this course. It lived up to all my expectations of an Open venue. The greens were exceptional, and everything was well-tended. I definitely need to play here a few more times to really appreciate it!

Fantastic ourse - definitely worth a visit!

Hosted the Open in 2021, absolutely premium course to play. Great if you keep it straight. Comfortable shoes recommended as quite firm under foot. Remember a suit, shirt and tie if you want to eat/drink inside the clubhouse
