What the club says: The last course designed by the legendry Sir Henry Cotton, Alto Golf embodies his belief that a golf course should test players with low handicaps but also provide a pleasant game for golfers of only average ability. Situated near the picturesque village of Alvor, the course offers extraordinary white sandy beaches, clear blue sea and fascinating cliffs which all add to its charm and character.
The par 72 course traverses two gently sloping valleys with the front nine offering stunning views of the bay of Lagos. The back nine, set against rolling slopes, offers quite a test and includes the (quite frankly) remarkable Sir Henry Cotton Challenge - a huge par 5. At 661 yards, it requires concentration and skill to ensure a respectable score. With gently undulating greens, the course also challenges your putting ability.

Hot day in Portugal
The course as a new layout hole 11 still par 3 si18, hole 12 is now a par 4 si2 hole 13 par 4 si16hole 14 par 4 si8 hole 15 par 3 si14 holes 16, 17 & 18 remain the same

Alto looking good
Nice round, albeit slow, but we were a two ball behind 4 and 3 balls. Ask to be paired up as you will always be behind 3 or 4 balls unless out at 7:30 am.Course in very good condition at the moment with nice greens. Felt the greens were rather slow but otherwise a nice round.

The hardest course I've ever played
This is just the hardest course I've ever played and because of such I struggled to enjoy it. The holes are very close together, which makes for a tricky and dangerous round made even more so with tight tree lined fairways all appear to be designed by a right handed player who doesn't want to give left handed players a chance. Mis-managed with insistence of play in 4 balls even if you have a small group of 6, 2 groups of 3 in your own little competition. Did not like that at all. Very disappointed with the day. Course in very good condition despite lots of rain on the night before and preceding days. Greens and fairways in very good condition. Well managed, and looked after course.

Another superb course as part of the Pestana facilities, easily in the best condition (compared to Gramacho and Silves) although the other courses were nothing to complain about. A large clubhouse, again with friendly staff and the same menu is exactly what we wanted after the round. Pace of play was a little slow but nothing to really complain about on a holiday tour. Tee shots are often tight and (as with the other courses) driver is often not the club. The course was challenging but not to the extent that the group didn't enjoy the round (hcps 14 - 26).

Alto Golf
Really nice tight tree lined course so have to be accurate off the tee. Most greens on a plateau so a lot of run off and greens quite small so have to be accurate.Course in good condition and enjoyed the challenge.

Last Leg of our Portugal Trip
I've never played on a more tight, beautiful course than this, a unique setting, not for big hitters that's for sure. You needed to be very accurate and controlled. The greens were lush and held the ball well. We were all a bit jaded by this time, usual Golf trip headaches, backaches, etc but Alto is a wonderful tree-lined course, and I for one cannot wait to come back.Reviewer Rating

Enjoyed a late afternoon tee off. Friendly staff got me out early as it was quiet. I had been warned about sanding of the greens when I booked but the greens were still true. Decent layout and great value as a twilight rate from 3pm.

Resort course
This resort course has two tees red and yellow only. It winds between houses and apartments. Out of the Pestana family of courses this is my least favourite. Do not get me wrong it is perfectly adequate but it lacks atmosphere.Reviewer Rating

A short but tough track
Course in good condition, particularly the greens. The fairways had clearly been watered, in fact many of them too watered as it was soft under feet which impacted ball contact at times. Club facilities and friendliness of bar staff were, as always, first classReviewer Rating

Tiger Tour 2019 - Day 4
Only 5 of us left on tour to play this and it was in okay condition and we played as a 5 ball taking 2 hours 45 minutes to play the18 holes!!!(Round played: May 2019 - Score: 89 Handicap: 11.9)

One for anybodies list
Tremendous course. Played after recent snow and wet weather and the place was in great condition. Greens are fast and tricky to read. Rest of course is very well maintained. Great views all over. Island green is 'interesting'. Staff are top notch to, as is the food. Changing rooms could do with a makeover but you don't spend your time there.Reviewer Rating

great course starts with a gentle par three has mostly good wide fairways. A better course now they have changed the 610 (yellows) 16th to a more manageable distance.(Round played: Feb 2018 - Score: 97 Handicap: 28.2)

golf for greys competition, good company and as always had a good day, this is a nice course but was undergoing maintenance at time of playing, most greens were being dressed and structural work going on the 16th long par 5

Of all the Pestana courses we played this was in OK condition but not great. It is fairly exposed to the sea I guess so some bare patches here and there. Greens fairly fast and in OK condition.

on arrival you book in at the club shop buggies were available. Their were groups waiting on the first tee so we started on the tenth. The course was enjoyable but straight forward and the greens can be reached in regulation, although the greens are some of the more difficult we played over the week. The prices in the club house after the game are in line with others although no food was served on the day. The clubhouse inside could do with a clean especially around the windows with numerous dead fly's and cobwebs rested on the window sills. We would play the course again it was enjoyable without being over taxing.
