What the club says: The course is a real test of accuracy and power. The tree-lined front nice meanders through the forest, uphill and downhill, requiring accuracy and precision, while the back nine is flatter and longer, allowing you the opportunity to open your shoulders and let go. West Essex is also home to the smallest championship green in England, nicknamed ‘the Frying Pan’ by members, the 159-yard 5th is a short downhill par three where you are trying to land your ball on a green that measures just 14 yards. West Essex Golf Club has evolved dramatically over a century and now stands proud as one of the premier clubs in Essex. Located in North Chingford just ten minutes from the M25 and the North Circular Road. The undulating fairways and the superb greens present golfers of all levels with a challenging but fair test.

Tricky, fun North London track

Course in very good condition if now very dry in places (how?) and some of the greens were very firm. Friendly members and staff in pro shop and bar.

As it says on the website a game of two half's..the front nine very tight and strategic and the back nine more of an open up and hit driver.

Would definitely recommend if looking for an option in North London - tests all of your game but maybe not one for the hooker/slicer..

Nice course - worth a visit

1st time at this venue. Course in good condition considering the recent weather. Some standing water on the fairways and in a couple of,the bunkers. Bunkers compacted due to rain as well. Greens in very good condition and despite obvious evidence of recent work were running quite true in most instances. The hills provided some very scenic views , and would definitely play again

Slick greens

The course is a real contrast of two halves. The front 9 are tight, big elevation changes, framed by mature trees, where you have to think your way around and make sure you put your ball in the right place to get to the green. The back 9 is more open and longer and presents less natural challenges. It is expensive to play but worth it - particularly with a county card - but be warned... the excellent greens are incredibly fast. I have barely come across faster in the UK, and certainly not in Essex. A great day out, pricey (including the clubhouse etc) but very welcoming. An interesting, enjoyable challenge.

What amazing changes

I played West Essex golf club the other day having not played it in a long while. First of all the condition was first class, the greens were fantastic for this time of view. Since I last played they have made a lot of changes, a fantastic new Trackman range, some new hazards on the back 9 making it even more tricky that it was before. Finally they have spent a lot of money on the bar area, it looks brilliant and the food and drink was first class.

Great Conditions & Starts off very interestingly

We were lucky to play in excellent conditions & the course looked fabulous. Starts off very interestingly but once the back 9 is underway fairways get wider & had a little bit of that up & back feel. That said I enjoyed the views & the greens were fair.

Quality Course and facilities

Played here last week with my son. Course was in tip top condition and fairway grass short and lush. No weeds in sight and ongoing maintenance evident. Great smooth and fast greens some with tough slopes. (Try and stop your ball on the 4th if you can.)
A new Range with Trackman shot info and a good putting green adjoining the terrace. Extensive lunch menu and bar choice. Thoroughly enjoyed my round. A tough course but you won’t lose too many balls playing here. Must be one of the best courses in Essex / East London situated in Chingford E4. M25 10 mins away.

Good challenging course

I played at West Essex as part of a golf society day. It is a nice looking course with some lovely vistas of London through the many trees. There are some interesting and challenging holes and the course is well kept, the bunkers especially so. We had good food in the clubhouse and the staff were helpful and friendly. We would go back again.

What a lovely course

Every hole has a different challenge to be faced. No two are the same. Greens in great condition. Some fairways (on the back 9 especially) seem to be recovering from last years scorching, but nothing to spoil your round. It's quiet hilly so consider a buggy. The clubhouse is excellent and there are very clear signs that money is being invested in the course. The staff are very welcoming.
