Goodbye Rusper Golf Club - September 2020

I wanted to play Rusper before it closed for good this month. I must say I really enjoyed it,
The course will still be maintained right up until the end and is still in fantastic condition.
The fairways were well cut and the greens were beautiful.
The water holes, Wallys hole, the holes in the trees, all had their charm..
The course looks like it is being sold for farmland and not housing, so that is something.
Goodbye Rusper, I really enjoyed playing you.
Thanks for the memories.
RIP.

A complete Gem of a course

Such a shame this course is being shut down, played it for the first time yesterday (24/08/20) and really enjoyed it. it really makes me sad to see courses like this go.
Obviously all the facilities are shut down, but you can see that this was once a lovely place to play golf.

An Old Gem That I Forgot

I first played this course when it was only a 9 hole course and it was tough then playing it now many years later and now an 18 holes course it is still bloody tough yet enjoyable it's a shame that it's closing but I hope to redeem myself before it closes in September.

Lovely course with many interesting holes. This course however definitely needs a bit of love, some of the tees need mowing, the greens ran true but again need cutting and although the bunkers are out of play, 150y markers missing; weeds and grass growing in abundance in all of them, I suspect they haven't been tended to since the beginning of the year. If these easy to rectify issues are addressed I would mark it as excellent all round

Still a hidden mystery

Though it is on the flight path for Gatwick, at this time there was only one plane taking off....how Covid has changed the landscape. Course in reasonable condition but in need of a haircut or two and the greens need rolling or at least flattening, Layout is maturing, though it was built in some heavy wooded area!! After 4 years you can see the growth in the young and mature trees making it even tougher between holes 7 to 14. Would visit in a couple of months once things have settled down again.

First time visitor. Clubhouse looks and feels like a dilapidated greenhouse but the welcome was warm and the breakfast was decent. It is a very tough course. Don't be fooled by the gentle open feel of the first two holes. Hole 3 is a tough par 5 with accuracy required for the second shot and that sets the tone for the trouble ahead. Lots of the holes have dog legs, small landing areas or require lay up shots that leave very long approaches into the greens. We all struggled to score. Despite word of drainage improvements and a fairly benign Autumn, the course played long and heavy and I still think it wont cope too well if the weather turns wet. Still, enjoyable day, good value for money at £30 and would love to have a crack at this course in the Summer.

Greens etc

As a member at Rusper I was saddened by the recent review. Rusper is one of the cheapest courses in the area. It is extremely challenging. Considerating the recent extreme conditions the course is bearing up pretty well. The greens are not as fast as they might be because our experienced green keepers know that cutting the grass any shorter would lead to long term damage. Surely a decent golfer would realise the speed of the greens and adapt their game accordingly.

Although I realise how difficult it is to maintain golf course in this sort of extreme weather, the fairways were expectedly dry, however, although the greens looked in good condition they were extremely slow handicapping putting. I also think the price per round is expensive and also the buggies, there is no indication of club house facilities being built and the whole aesthetics of the club as a whole is drab.

I’m a member up at Rusper but also take the opportunity to play on a lot of other courses in the area. The course is in a great condition even with all the recent dry hot weather, the greens are regularly watered so are in perfect condition and like putting on a carpet, definitely the best feature. The fairways are now beginning to dry out in patches but I must say they are still better than most of the local courses which have suffered in the heat. The green keepers keep the rough well cut so it’s not too punishing when you stray from the fairways. Each hole has its own very different challenges and this is definitely a unique feature as no two holes are the same. My handicap has definitely improved as a result of playing here and whilst it is a challenge every time I play it does mean when I play at other local courses I am better adapted and my handicap travels very well. The price for membership represents the best value for money in the whole county, the members here are all very friendly and there are lots of opportunities to join in club competitions. The course did get very wet last winter but so too did all the other local courses and whilst the fairways did suffer our greens stayed firm and rolled well and we only had 1 temp green for a couple of weeks and no temp fairways. In comparing Rusper with other courses in the area there is only one winner for me and I’m looking forward to other planned improvements with the drainage, upgrade to the driving range and with Gatwick golfs arrival

One happy Golfer

This is a response to the unhappy person who has just insulted our club, our owners, our course, and our loyalty which obviously they do not have. Some members and the owners are trying very hard to make Rusper golf club a place to be proud of,the course last year was in excellent condition (I guess you never saw much of the fairways and the greens they were great I think you must good you missed them out,as far as the family that took over the running of the club we all have to start somewhere and they are trying very hard,as for yourself your remarks are not helpful and if this is your attitude stay away and make more room for nice people to play a beautiful game on a beautiful course when the weather permits, this year all courses have suffered and a lot of them have been closed but although wet Rusper has tried to remain open and if you speak to the staff politely they are helpful so please instead of knocking them for trying. Regards a happy golfer at Rusper.

A high quality challenge!!!

Given the difficulty with very wet conditions and grass that is still growing at a ridiculous rate, I found this course to be in great condition. The rough is a bit long, but you will just need to know how to use an 8 iron properly. The greens are true and interesting. For value for money this is a great find and a proper golfers challenge. It is also not one of those places where it, or the members, are up themselves. Try the food, it is excellent!!!!

I have played Rusper regularly for many years and remarkably it improves year after year. It is a very testing course which I recommend to the low handicapper who wants to really test his skill but equally for the high handicapper the challenge to improve your game is compelling.
The investment over many years makes Rusper playable in virtually all conditions...just more difficult sometimes. Go for it !!!

Happy member

I saw the comment from London about his visit on Saturday, and thought I'd respond. He played on the day that storm Brian was coming in, not an ideal day. We'd had a lot of rain already, and are on clay so, yes, it can get wet, but unplayable ? not sure I agree. As for the greens, we have had disease on them, but all except the 10th are recovering nicely, they are just a little slow. Rusper is a great golf course, and a friendly club. Please don't let one negative review put you off.

Excellent Course

I played Rusper this morning (20/09/2017) and have played it many, many times before. It is a truly excellent course which has actually been very well looked after and has been much improved over the past year or so. The first couple of holes provide a gentle introduction but subsequent holes provide a challenge for golfers at all levels. Both fairways and greens have benefitted from Grant's, (the head greenkeeper's), knowledge and experience and are in better condition than many on courses costing twice as much to play. The owners and staff are all exceptionally welcoming and the food is very good both in terms of taste and value for money. I cannot recommend Rusper highly enough.
