Challenging climbs , great views, a mix of link type holes, greens in good shape but small. Bunkers with gravel in them! but not many. Club house 300 yards from 1st tee.!! Rough gets impossible second half of the year !

Rolling Hills & Great Views

I’ve never seen the course so cut back. Gorse & long grass are all set to return so play it now before those searches for balls begin. 2 temp tees. Greens slow but fair. Signs of mud in areas but not near the greens or fairways. Enjoy!

Hilly, punitive rough, fast greens

Hilly course with punitive wispy rough that you think it would be easy to find balls in but isn't. Played after days of rain, however course dry due to hills and chalk base. Greens very fast. Busy so relatively slow. Friendly staff and members.

Very nice course to play and tests your golf in the summer it plays like a links course.

Due to the course being around a SSSI the long grass rough won't be cut until the Autumn I believe. So don't expect to not lose balls. Otherwise it's a quality course & the winds that are often evident will help or hinder. I love the views & the challenge.

Perfect conditions

For October. Best time to play such an exposed course is when the sun is out & no wind. However due to the course being in an environmentally protected area the rough was ruthless & whispy grass from a distance was anything but when the ball went off line. Greens fast enough & played very well but hard to hold it. Will keep on trying because it’s a brilliant challenge.

Novel course design

Not played here before. Very hilly course built across public land over and across the local hills. No hole is flat. Tee offs are either uphill to the green or down to the green. Some deep valleys cut across fairways. The rough is awful. Not on the fairway, play a provisional. Walking from green to tee on the 16th(?) is an uphill climb of some 70 ft and 200 yds. Not for the unfit. I would never have finished the course without a buggy. Local rule is that you have to have a medical condition to hire one. You will have one when you finish.

We found the course in good condition but there was very long rough which meant we were looking for balls and losing balls - unfair challenge - not rushing back to play here!

A fun challenge

Played April 2023. Royston golf course is a heathland-based course and is one of the hillier courses that I've played. Weather conditions on the day were poor, with rain/drizzle for the front 9 and strong winds for the back 9. Despite this, it was a truly enjoyable experience. The course provided a fun challenge that kept me on my toes throughout the entire round.
Each hole presents a unique set of challenges. The fairways were well maintained and the greens were really well cared for. The course demands a broad range of skills, making it an excellent challenge for golfers of all levels. Despite the poor weather, the course is situated at
a higher altitude than much of the surrounding area, thereby offering some stunning views of Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. My understanding is that the rough can become particularly challenging through the summer months.

The practice facilities near the clubhouse are reasonable and include a pair of nets, a well-maintained putting green, and short game practice area comprising three holes

Very dry linksy type course. Plenty of hills and mostly playing into the breeze for front 9. Tess good condition, Greens good. Aveerage to faster pace and middle section of holes had more undulating greens. Spectacular views to the West.

A scenic heathland links golf course with panoramic views over three counties - this course is both a test of your golf & your fitness. The sloping fairways make good ball-striking essential to post a decent score.
Most of the Par 4's are not overlong but the well-kept greens are smallish targets & have subtle breaks to navigate.
Overall a thoroughly enjoyable course which will play well all year round.

A bit of a trek

A rather strange course which has the clubhouse nearly ten minutes walk from the first tee. It is also VERY hilly, with quite harsh rough. We played it in 20mph winds and it was a real struggle. Greens were good, a few mats being used and disappointing to have no flag system, especially when some greens were difficult to gauge from a distance. Pro was very friendly and course was in good condition, but a bit too 'mountain goat' for me!

Great challenge

Was a wet and windy day for my first return to my home town club for over 40 years.
Warm friendly greeting at the club house where service was very good.
The course with its heathland grass, where the rough is tall but wispy, allows you to at least find your ball if offline. Hope to play there again.
