What the club says: Ross on Wye is a woodland course carved out of an oak and silver birch forest. Its tree lined, undulating fairways mean you have to be straight off the tee or you will be in trouble. The greens are well kept, making the course an enjoyable round of golf.

Great course in super shape

Great course

Great course
Lovely course in great setting , good test of golf & need to be pretty straight off the tees , greens quick & fairways very nice , clubhouse & pro shop very good , excellent course well worth a visit(Round played: Sep 2020 - Score: 93 Handicap: 15.8)

Good Course
Overall a nice course but some bare patches on fairways and greens have had a lot of drainage work done last year so they are still repairing the putting surface. Expensive if you don't play with a member (£50) and (£20) with a member.(Round played: Apr 2019 - Score: 86 Handicap: 17)

Outstanding Winter Course
We played in late December on a fresh Saturday morning following a week of snow and rain. Despite this, all the greens were in play apart from 3 temporaries and there was only one winter tee - seriously impressive. The course snakes through long stretches of forest that reward accuracy and shot placement but there are plenty of opportunities to get the driver out and a couple of the par 4's were drivable today as the course was set up shorter for winter.
The tightness of the course is reminiscent of The Dukes course at Woburn and is visually stunning. Layout is varied and the course is hilly so no doubt it plays quite differently in summer, we'll be coming back to find out!
Friendly club with excellent staff and a good sausage sandwich.
Handicap 20, scored +20

I scored my best yesterday of +2 for the front nine in twilight play by almost leaving my driver in the bag
Unless you strike it very straight hole one is best approached with a 3 wood in hand. Returns from a well hit drive are limited into the up slope. Driver is needed on hole 2 to catch the downslope at around 200 yes. Otherwise the second, approach, shot on this second hole is as tough as they get. Play this hole as a par 5 and your overal score may benefit.
The third is a 3wood. The 4th is a strange hole in terms of risk reward. It is a try worth trying to hold your tee shot close to the trees on the right as anyhow the ball ends up left of this siping fairway. 5th and especially 6th are opportunities to make something back. The 8th requires a decent drive or 3 wood followed by a second shot to do no more than catch the downslope 100 short ignore the green.
The ladies tees are possibly the toughest I have ever seen on a course relative to the men's and seem admitted though they were added later. The committee couldn't perhaps consider moving them up a fair bit on some of the longer holes. Laughably the ladies is behind the men's tee on one hole, the 12th.
This course records for me and women highlight the issue.

Attractive course in oak woods

Coarse was in reasonable condition after heavy over night rain
(Round played: Nov 2016 - Score: 95 Handicap: 19.8)

(Round played: Oct 2016 - Score: 91 Handicap: 18.9)

All 4 of us had breakfast in the clubhouse before playing which was very good.
The opening hole of Ross gives you a taste of what the rest of the course is like. Manicured fairways, spectacular views & slick greens. The holes that stand out for me are 8 & 16 as they share the same teeing area.
The 8th is a downhill dog leg right par 5 which requires a well thought out 2nd shot so you can attack the tight green with your 3rd shot.
The 16th is a short par 4 (296 yards) downhill which can be reached by the big hitters (as one of my playing partners did!) I hit 3 wood, lob wedge & walked off with the same score of par as the big hitter (lol)
If I was a member here I would consider myself very lucky as not only do they have a great course but all of the staff are very welcoming & friendly.
Can't wait to go back.
