What the club says: Pyrford is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and wildlife. Ringed by magnificent woodland the fairways weave between sculptured mounds and the 23 acres of lakes, fringed with bulrushes, reeds and lilies, give the course its distinctive and unique characteristic with water ever present.

The 6,230 yard course is separated into 2 loops providing a choice of starting positions. Every hole is different and whilst the course may not be the longest by today’s modern designs a good score will require careful strategy and use of every club in your bag. The best players may well be tempted to take on the challenge of longer carries yet the design gives the less experienced player a safer and more productive route.

Different combinations of tee positions provide a challenge for players of all abilities and the unique design ensures no two rounds are the same.

Very disappointing to not be able to order food at 4:30pm on a Saturday afternoon as kitchen closed. Also there are very limited beers and all soft drinks are sugar free only. NO coke or Pepsi ?

Course Guide

As many reviews have said or alluded to this is,as our Ryder Cup opponents from the Good old US of A, like, a target golf course. Accuracy is the key.
After a night of heavy rain many of the bunkers waterlogged. Fairways were full of bare lies, they may recover but not for the foreseeable future as the growing season is ending.
Greens were OK. I have to say that as I sank a few long putts! I have played on far better recently.
Not, I have to say a course I relish playing.
Pleasant staff both in the pro shop and bar.

Course in good condition

I’ve played this course a few times over the summer and it’s in good condition after the sweltering summer. Greens also recovered from the dry spell. Good value for money and a great test.

Plenty of water

If you like plenty of water hazards you'll love this. fair course with good greens and fairways. Played in 30 mph of wind made it all the more interesting.

Terrible condition

I wouldn't usually leave a review but this course was in particularly bad condition. We unfortunately ignored the recent reviews that said as much, and suffered with some unplayable greens.

It's a shame as the course design has a lot of potential, but is seriously under-invested and messy.

Disappointing

We were warned about the greens being recently spiked. However, the greens were ok. The course looked tired. Fairways had weeds, some tee boxes had bramble, and hardly any sand in bunkers- in fact the bunkers had more stones in than sand. It?s always been a well looked after, nicely presented golf course- not so much nowadays

Suffering in the heat...

Played the course for the first time earlier with some mates who raved about their rounds there over the last few years...

I won't be going back and I don't think they will be either.

Credit where it is due though; it's July 2018 and there's been almost no rain for 7 weeks so everywhere is suffering, but we played a course yesterday (within 15 miles) where the fairways are green and the greens were receptive and true. None of which applies at Pyrford...

The greens were terrible. The grass length on the greens was nowhere near consistent. There were cracks on some, replacement patches on others, scorched areas, over-mown areas, unmarked GUR, random holes... And goose droppings... Okay, so we're all used to doing a bit of 'gardening' when lining up a putt, but this would have required a major amount of shovelling s*** if trying it on every hole!

The fairways were terrible. Scorched. Dead. Rock solid. I luckily realised early on that trying to get a club under the ball was pointless and started to play chip-and-runs with my 7-iron from up to 120 yards out. My mates soon tired of jarring their wrists with attempts to wedge shots in to the green off unforgiving lies. We even started to play shots towards the rough to give us a chance to get something under the next shot! We were stunned as we walked down the 16th and realised that the left-hand of that fairway and rough was green (probably from leakage from the neighbouring canal), but the rest was parched. There was a sprinkler head about a 100 yards from the green, but since the green 'oasis' was only about a foot across, I leave it for you to judge the last time it had been used.

The bunkers? They were a joke! (They were terrible!) So you have to make allowances for footprints of a non-human kind on a course with a high degree of wildlife, but every bunker I paid attention to was peppered with Footjoy and Adidas and Nike (etc.) prints. Add to that, more stones than the England Rugby scrum pack per bunker! And weeds!!! Really?!?!? The grass isn't growing on the rest of the course, but the weeds are flourishing in the bunkers? How come?

I absolutely concede that the design of Pyrford might make for a challenging course, but unless you can buy a course guide, "out of stock", from the less-than-bothered guys in the proshop, you're just going to lose ball after ball - and not enjoy the process!

Let me summarise by suggesting that if you have the option to play somewhere else for the money (or less!) then take it - at least through the summer of 2018.

Lovely, interesting course

Loads of water, clever layout which puts a premium on thoughtful play. Great condition and a lovely setting - highly recommended. Club pro's also very helpful holding onto my club for several weeks after I left it out on the course. Recommend a visit.

Great condition

Played on a sunny May day in a soc. Good tees , good fairways and superb greens. The course is short at 5700 off yellows but water and bunkers on all but 1 hole, lots of standout holes 3,8,9,12,14,18. Par 3s are pretty short with max 8 or 9 iron needed. All par 3s are over water bar 1 that has a 100yd bunker. Im not a big hitter but reached SI1 in 2 shots for a par, 420plus normally into wind. 18 can be a card wrecker so be long and left off the tee for an easy 2nd. Well worth a visit. One neg is couple of bunkers need a bit more sand ( sorry ). Great course.

Water World

This course has water coming into play on 14 out of the 18 holes so ensure you are straight and know your distances! the course appears quite short and tempts you to try with the big stick which we did due to the game of fourball betterball stableford. Plot your way round here and you can score well. The greens were very good.
