A picturesque part heathland, part parkland course with some fantastic holes throughout. There are several tricky par 3's with some well placed hidden bunkers.

First time playing here. Paid a day rate of £135 to play twice, foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon. Represented great value for the quality of the course which was exceptional save for a little variance in bunker quality. Otherwise great, though they're keen on a long par 5 and with only 1 par 5, par 68 is a tough ask. Course is what you'd expect from a traditional heathland set up with heather and other similar foliage. Not quite in colour when I played which was a shame as I would think it looks spectacular once in full bloom. The course has a nice amount of variety and gives you a decent shot with driver if you hit a reasonable ball. Green complexes are great and provide a real challenge. Greens rolled as well as you'd expect for a course of this quality. Club did a great job of fitting our 4 ball around a large society in both morning and afternoon and had a nice lunch on the terrace from the bar menu between rounds. Play it if you get the chance.

Good interesting course
This was my first visit to New Zealand Golf Club, with a society which I joined during 2025, and which plays mainly Surrey courses. Our package included a full English breakfast before golf, followed by tea and sandwiches after. The staff were very friendly and looked after us very well.The course is tucked quietly among the pines and heather of Surrey?s classic golfing corridor, the New Zealand Golf Club offers something increasingly rare in modern golf: a sense of calm, unhurried tradition. From the moment you turn down the narrow tree-lined drive, it's clear that this is a place that values atmosphere as much as architecture.
Built in 1895 and shaped by the legendary Tom Dunn, the layout is understated but full of character. Its charm lies not in dramatic elevation changes or modern spectacle but in the way it uses the natural heathland landscape. Fairways are framed beautifully by towering pines, and the heather?gorgeous when in bloom?adds both colour and strategic bite.
At just over 6,000 yards, the course isn't long by today?s standards, but it rewards precision over power. Doglegs tempt bold lines, greens are subtly contoured, and poor positioning quickly leads to clever recovery shots or nervy lag putts. The par-3s, in particular, are standouts?elegant, exacting, and wonderfully photogenic.
Condition & Maintenance
When we played in mid-November, we arrived to the first frost of this Winter, but that soon cleared. The club is known for its immaculate presentation. Firm, fast-running fairways and true, consistent greens make every round enjoyable. Bunkers are tidy and well-placed, with traditional shapes that complement the course?s heritage aesthetic.
Atmosphere & Experience
New Zealand Golf Club is famously traditional. The clubhouse is charming and understated, offering a quiet retreat rather than modern flash. The pace of play was excellent, the members welcoming, and the overall vibe decidedly ?golf first.? It's the kind of place where history isn't advertised but simply felt.
Who Will Enjoy It
Golfers who appreciate classic design, strategic shotmaking, and a peaceful, almost timeless setting will fall in love with this course. Those seeking dramatic modern features or tournament-style difficulty may find it subtle, but for many, that subtlety is exactly the point.
Overall
I found New Zealand Golf Club to be a gem: a beautifully preserved heathland course with charm, character, and craftsmanship. It's a reminder of how elegant golf can be when it leans into simplicity and tradition. A must-play for purists and for anyone who wants to experience one of Surrey?s quieter treasures. Already looking forward to playing in 2026.

Very expensive. No twilight rate, even on a Monday, and notwithstanding the clubhouse closed pre 6.15pm so no access to facilities (or a drink!). Course in ok condition but fairways laughable. Very bare and far worse than other courses in area that I’ve played recently. Too many par 3s and only one par 5 (which is short) make the course quite one dimensional too. Not one I would return to - felt like a money making exercise and not particularly welcoming to visitors sadly. I’d (re)play Worplesdon, St George’s and others over this one.

Gem of a course
I played here today and what a joy to play,Heather on most holes and a wonderful layout. The par 3s can be tricky and there is 5 of them. Wonderful old school clubhouse with good selection of food also available. We pre ordered beef sandwiches after the golf and they were beautiful..Half way house serving alcohol which was a bonus.

Exceptional Course, with a small blemish
Wow! What a beautiful course, I think its #41 ranking in England leaves it slightly underrated.Just one slight issue we had that we didn’t appreciate, which was the starter on the first tee hurrying us along and quite bluntly and repeatedly telling us ‘to get on the tee’ as if we were late for our 11am tee time. I would understand if we were in fact late but we were standing next to the teebox, with a group in range on the fairway and the time was 10:57am (we had all hit our tee shots by 11:01am as I checked the time).
I think paying £680 should get us slightly better treatment that this and a ‘Welcome to New Zealand Golf Club, enjoy your round’ would have sufficed. Again course was exceptional and definitely worth the money, this was simply a slight blemish and a shame that they had to live up to the stereotypical welcome many have received at a snooty private golf club.
Rest of the staff were very accommodating and course itself feels like you are in another world and one of the most enjoyable rounds we have ever had, despite some sub standard play from all of us!

Hard for visitors to get on and can see why
New Zealand is an exclusive golf club, getting on here can be hard unless with a member. It is an old school club, a lot history and many of the original features still there. I paid £170 for 18 holes on a Monday, a high price considering all the great courses around. Unfortunately, the whole experience was underwhelming, the course condition was ok (greens good) compared with Hankley Common or West Hill, it doesn’t come close, the course is relatively flat and shortish. High number of par threes. The layout was rather boring, no features holes and nothing took my breath away. If I had paid £60 I would say it was nice, for £170, rather poor. If you want a good course around woking for the same price, go to West Hill, Hankley Common (my favourite) or worpelsdon. Not worth the effort trying to play.Reviewer Rating

Has a reputation for being from a different era, but actually plenty of people in shorts without knee length socks. Even saw one guy with his shirt not tucked in!! Practice facilities are limited (small putting green & one net in the woods by the first) but ok. Holes are fairly samey - heather, narrow, occasional dogleg, or short one, but all fine. Surprised to see standing water by 18th green after heavy rain, yet none anywhere else. Fairways pretty bald - can see why it's preferred lies much of the year.

Fun Little Course
Hidden out of the way in Woking, this little course is a treat to play. Short and only a par 68 do not tell you the whole story. With a LOT of heather around the course, stray from the fairways at your peril. It was firm and dry when I played, meaning a lot of bounce and no need to use driver or fairway metals (I used Driver on the 1 par 5 but then only had a 7 iron into the green), this often ended with running into the rough or heather. The greens were immaculate, running true and a pleasant 10 to 10.5. definitely worth playing if you get the chance.Reviewer Rating
