What the club says: Finchley is set in the grounds of an imposing Victorian stately home that has served as the clubhouse for more than 70 years. The panorama below shows the view from the Veranda of the clubhouse, where you can relax and enjoy a drink and some food after your round while watching the action on the 12th, 13th and 18th holes.

The 6,356 yard, par 72 wooded, picturesque, parkland course is recognised as the finest challenge of golf in London. Designed by five-times Open winner James Braid, his short, uphill 12th hole, "Braid's Masterpiece", is one of the best know par threes in the south of England.

Excellent course. Well worth a visit

Finchley is a great test of your all round game. Narrow fairways, plenty of OOB, and undulating, quick greens, even in the very wet conditions played in today. A great mix of holes, ranging from short to long par 3's, 4's and 5's which made the round really enjoyable. There's few warm up nets, a small chipping area alongside and quite a small putting green, which if I was being over critical could do with being relocated from its present position and made a bit larger, it really is too small. The imposing historical looking clubhouse is welcoming and adds a touch of character to the place and the hospitality is first rate. There's a good selection of beer and excellent catering on hand. I'm going to return in the summer, as I'd like to see Finchley as its best. It was a tough test in the wet, windy conditions, but a thoroughly enjoyable one.

Great visit

This course is in good condition and very scenic. Just make sure you wear a helmet as many tee box are dangerously situated and fairways are very close to each others...

Good value

Course in reasonable condition, greens fast especially given time of year, a number of the fairways suffering from lack of grass, particularly 16th where ball rolled backwards over 50 yards on approach shot. Pace of play good until hit a slow competition three ball.

Good greens

The greens were some of the best I have played this year, the fairways and tees were suffering from the hot summer. The first is a very short downhill par 4, the last is a great looking hole, but has a ditch across the fairway hidden from the tee at 210 yards (filling this ditch in would make this a great finishing hole), I dropped a shot after hitting a good drive into the ditch that I didn't know was there. The rest of the course has some interesting holes, the par fives are a bit generous (this would probably be a strong par 70). You can use tee times website to get very good value green fees.

Hidden away, tight acreage but used it well. Not as tough a walk as I had been told. Very good practise nets, chipping and putting area, course clearly marked and colour coded flags. Greens excellent, 10 on the stimp, firm and fairly sloped. Lovely scenery.
Fairways were average after the dry summer. First hole is silly, a par 4 you could stick an iron close to. Tenth has the same problem but would make a nice tough par 3 with an elevated tee. Last hole is spectacular but has a hidden open ditch. Forcing a lay up if you know it’s there. Desperately needs filling in and the drive tightening.
That said, overall very enjoyable far superior to south Herts at the moment, under rated on here.

Very pleasant course

Nice varied course with short and long par 4s. Very pleasant. Par 3 12 is evil, be warned.

Highly priced but Weak course layout

Finchley seems to be an over priced course for what it offers. Facilities are good however the course itself has a very weak layout, with a cluster of tee boxes and greens close to each other. Expect to be hearing a lot of 'fore' when you play here. Poor design takes away from what could be a great course.

Challenging course well worth playing. Dry in patches due to dry weather, however, the greens are in excellent condition and were pretty quick when we played. Will definitely play again.

Fantastic layout and outstanding greens

Finchley offers an interesting and challenging layout. Some drivable par 4s tempt you with potential rewards and the undulating nature of the course add excitement. The greens were outstanding when I played there; firm, fast and very true.

Played on a showery afternoon and really enjoyed the course. I was worried about the receptiveness of the greens based on previous reviews, but they seemed fine to me with adjustments to the landing point for approach shots (they were still quite slippery even being wet).
