What the club says: The idyllic Castle Barna Golf Club in County Offaly is one of Ireland's hidden gems, set on some of the most beautiful countryside in the Heart of Ireland. Open for membership greenfees and societies.

Nestled along the banks of the Grand Canal on it's route from Dublin to the Shannon, Castle Barna Golf club is on the edge of Daingean town, a town steeped in history and beauty. On arrival the beautiful stonework of the clubhouse gives a hint of the excellent quality of the club.

The greens are immaculately manicured and whether you are a high or low handicap golfer you will seldom make the same putt twice. The fairways are always in mint condition. The course is interspersed with many trees, some of which are hundreds of years old.

The 9th hole is a real beauty along side the Canal. The Green is protected by trees on two sides and the Grand Canal on the other, a real pressure hole.

Played here as it was available for play early afternoon on a Saturday through teeofftimes. You check in for golf in the bar and this was very busy on a Saturday lunchtime so we perhaps did not get the welcome I would expect you would get when less frantic! After the round the guy in the bar was really friendly and chatty. The course was in good condition, a few tee boxes were slightly divoted but there was always a clear spot. The course is decent, the fairways were very good and the greens true and very fast. Rough is very playable so course is quite forgiving. Decent venue for double figure handicappers, the single figure guys might find it a bit straightforward although they would probably still enjoy it.

I played the course last week for the first time in two years, as I live abroad. I found it to be in excellent condition. The trees, greens and fairways have matured beautifully. I would certainly recommend it to any of my friends. Staff were so friendly and helpful also.

We played this course in September this year (2007) as part of our annual golf tour. We decided to go to the heart of Ireland and this was our 3rd course. Overall the course was in good condition and there were some nice holes to play in particular the short par 3 9th, the entrance road to the clubhouse on the left, a canal on the right and some mature trees around the undulating green made for an interesting prospect from the tee box! The welcome and hospitality at the club was excellent and we've never been looked after so well - the staff were fantastic.
