What the club says: Appleby Golf Club is situated two miles east of the town centre just off the A66. The club enjoys a golfing history dating back to 1894 when the game was played on the Minsceugh just outside the town. In 1903 the club was reformed on its present location on the Brackenber Moor. The Open Champion Willie Fernie of Troon laid out the course using the natural contours of the moor with short heathery rough and bracken to provide a challenging and spectacular course described as "Gleneagles in the raw". His creation is undeniably testing, as the 5998-yard par 68 (SSS 70) course contains no par 5's but some long challenging par 4's.
Appleby Golf Club is renowned for offering the best, all year round, greens in Cumbria and the friendliness of the welcome to all.
England Golf Central says "Appleby is a well drained moorland course which provides links like conditions and is well known for a wide variety of holes and several testing par 4s with outstanding views of the Pennines, Howgills and Lake District mountains". Described as "a hidden gem and excellent value".
?
Gary Wolstenholme, most capped player in amateur golf, says "Appleby is one of his favourite courses with excellent views of the Lakeland hills, some great holes and fabulous turf. Well worth the drive there."

Golf in its purest form!
Appleby is a utterly stunning moorland course, this is golf in its purest form, no bells and whistles. This course is a test and has a stunning signature blind par 3 “Bell Hole” . The 5th is a knee knocker with an elevated fairway over what feels like a gorse canyon.Although no par 5’s there are long par 4 holes to test the best drivers of the ball, course was in excellent condition, wind can appear our of nowhere to add additional fun.
There are sheep meandering everywhere with the greens fences off to prevent them being damaged by them. For me, this made it more enjoyable as added some interesting additional obstacles. The fences are no bother, only the grumpiest of golfer would moan about them.
The clubhouse is great, staff and members super friendly and chatty. Excellent bacon sandwich can be had pre round and a good coffee. There is even a full size snooker table you can play if the weather turned and you retired to the clubhouse for a tipple.
I have now played at 72 golf courses in the UK and Appleby is by far my favourite. Without a shadow of a doubt one of the best golf courses in the UK.

Amazing Appleby
Well, here goes Appleby.Amazing course layout. Not what I expected. Great condition. No fairway bunkers, but, lots of tricky greenside ones. No trees in play, unless you are really wild.
Contours amazing. A few blind shots, but, wow oh wow.
I loved Appleby. The closest thing to a Links Conditioned Course I have ever found inland.
If you like quirky, challenging golf, get to Appleby. It’s worth a visit.
I will be back.

Beautiful
Played recently after being told how good it was and was not disappointed. The weather had been quite wet but the course seems to shrug the dampness away. No par 5's but some of the par 4's are tough and if the wind was against you they would be very difficult. Facilities are very good and the clubhouse and the food were excellentReviewer Rating

Classic moorland course that plays like an ?inland Links?. Excellent greens that are always superbly maintained.Long par fours and intriguing par threes combine to ensure that you have to think your way round to find a good score. Completely natural surroundings offering spectacular views of the Pennines and the distant Lake District fells. At this time of year the bird life is vibrant on the moor so expect to see curlew lark lapwing and oyster catcher in abundance. A friendly welcome awaits you. Full clubhouse facilities from next week following government guidelines.Reviewer Rating

Hidden Gem !
We drove 2.5hrs to play this course on the way to Slaley Hall amd what a good idea it turned out to be, such a lovely setting in the countryside with sheep running around everywhere. The course has been nicely thought out, with some seriously amazing holes like no others you will have played. Cute little fences around each green which keep the sheep off, but do sometimes get in your way ... just one of the quirks of the course. The 15th is a hole to be seen and played !Reviewer Rating

Super understated golf course
From the start, an excellent day. Ample parking, very friendly, helpful welcome in club house.Lovely course. Superb views, very well maintained fairways and greens on a common. A little width on the fairways was helpful to a first time visitor. However the course remained a very fair test. The Bell Hole was a swine!! Thank you Appleby for a super round of golf.

Great course rude staff
Me and my brother drove from grange over sands to play a round of golf(1 1/2 hrs) on arrival we were told by the professional in the shop that we were late and holding up the course. There were 2 lady golfers who said the were happy for us to play through. As I went back in to get 2 score cards he said in a sharp voice "what are you doing hurry up". Never have I been told off for being late for golf. It's not like we were late 3 minutes to be precise. The golf course is a great course and a very good set up. Would return and play. It after the rude gentleman i won't be rushing.Reviewer Rating
