Experience Minthis Golf Club & Resort

By: Liam Moore | Wed 15 Dec 2021

Cyprus has long been an enticing destination for European golfers, but the reopening of Minthis Golf Club & Resort has further highlighted the island’s connection to the game of golf.

With ten golf courses dotted throughout the territory - and world-class resorts - it comes as little surprise to see Cyprus shifting as one of the more popular golfing destinations. Below, we provide an in-depth summary of Minthis Golf Club & Resort, in addition to some fantastic deals that are available exclusively with Golfbreaks.

Resort

The resort at Minthis is exactly what you would expect from a contemporary project: modern and visually appealing. The rooms feature sumptuous interiors and modern technology that has been included to enhance the comfort of your stay. There are 22 luxury suites that overlook either the Troodos Mountains, Gardens or the golf course on-site and there’s certainly no better place to wake up for a day of golfing adventure.

All rates are based on double occupancy and the breakfast buffet, that’s served at the clubhouse every morning, is included within your stay. Additionally, you can enjoy the full extent of all the resort’s features, activities and entertainment slots.

Golf Executive Suites

Minthis Suites

For the obsessed golfers out there, Minthis Resort can offer the rental of a Golf Executive Suite, a dedicated room designed with the golfer in mind. They are all situated on the first floor of the building and they have been enhanced with surreal views of the championship-standard golf course that lies beyond.

You can wake up next to the greenery of the course and even enjoy your breakfast as you gaze across the peaceful lake and the characterful 12th-century monastery. These rooms are open-planned, and they include a fully equipped kitchen, dining room and an exquisitely stylish living room with an attached private-covered veranda. The master bedroom boasts a luxurious queen-sized bed with an en-suite bathroom for easy access; the second bedroom contains two single beds and a family bathroom for further convenience.

Golf Course Design

Minthis Resort

Prior to delving deep into the golf course at Minthis Resort, let’s discuss the design of the loop - which intelligently utilises elevation to bolster its challenge. The layout has an altitude of 550 metres and it is a course for all seasons, whether you enjoy the cooler breezes of summer or a mild winter climate. The course was originally designed by Donald Steel in 1934 but it has since undergone renovation work by Mackenzie & Ebert - a company that the R&A rely on to restore Open Rota golf courses.

The belief at Minthis is that the golf course should naturally weave and utilise the landscape into its layout, not suffer as a consequence of its existence. As fervent believers of this, the design team have been instrumental with not only enhancing certain parts of the course, but redesigning holes and new greens.

As a result, the recently re-opened golf resort offers fantastic variety between holes and the new greens have been seeded with 007 Creeping Bent Grass to help complement the renovation. Furthermore, green-side bunkers have been renovated and their surroundings have been reshaped. After the renovation work had been completed, the course was left with a distance in excess of 6,500 yards - which will provide a stern test for seasoned golfers.

Golf Course

Minthis

There are few places throughout Europe that can offer such a tranquil environment for the game of golf - let alone Cyprus! The elevated tees that feature heavily throughout the round will encourage all golfers to bomb it with the driver but the tree-lined fairways offer sufficient protection against that aggressive approach. Ultimately, careful assessment of each and every shot will be the secret to scoring well and respectfully.

The front nine is the shorter half of the course, encircling the 12th-centruy monastery, olive trees, vineyards and orchards. This opening section has been cleverly designed to give players a fair start to their round, whilst also featuring obstacles that the golfer must avoid. When teeing from the par-5 third hole, the fairway slopes towards the trees that protect the perimeter of the cut grass and thus, an accurate drive is mandatory. The par-4 sixth hole requires your entire concentration as you will need to trust your instinct when you play your approach shot blindly.

The ninth hole finishes adjacent to the contemporary clubhouse but as you make the turn, prepare for the difficulty to be cranked up substantially. The 10th hole has been freshly redesigned but it mirrors the remainder of the course in difficulty and what is yet to come. Teeing from the elevated marker, a well-struck tee shot will need to carry over the valley before finding the generous fairway on the opposing side. From there, you are faced with another blind shot but this time steeply uphill - so it’s important to account for the incline with your club selection. With out of bounds dominating the back of the green, laying up would suit the majority of golfers but for those who brave the evident danger are duly rewarded.

The short par-4 14th will encourage golfers to get as tight to the green as possible, as this hole is surely the biggest risk and reward moment of your round. A well-struck drive can reach the green but with the steep valley cascading away, it will take a brave - and confident - golfer to take on such a great risk.

Signature Hole

Minthis Golf

The signature hole at Minthis deserves its own recognition - it’s the only island green to feature on the island! The 15th has been meticulously transformed into a nerve-jangling island green and its challenge will leave a memory that lasts a lifetime. It features no bunkers or fairway, and with only 164 yards tee-to-green, it should be accessible for the majority of golfers.

However, nothing short of a perfectly timed shot will find the putting surface and if the design of this hole isn’t difficult enough, wait until you face a cross-wind that is likely to manipulate the ball towards the expansive water hazard that surrounds this mightily impressive hole.

Spa

The Wellness Centre at Minthis Resort will provide ample entertainment away from the golf. The retreat blends the restorative power of local herbs and minerals with contemporary science to help rejuvenate and restore the individual. You can awaken your senses with invigorating mint aromas in the sensory courtyards or experience wet and dry plateaus.

By taking a 360-degree holistic approach to physical wellbeing, the spa focuses on personalisation to help achieve wellness goals. Their knowledgeable therapists and practitioners will support you through the programs, selecting treatments that are suited to solely you. All experiences have been designed to stimulate the senses and help rebalance, working with sensorial contrasts of hot and cold, wet and dry and indoor or outdoor.

Dining at Minthis

Dining at Minthis is a luxury experience and with outstanding eateries situated on-site, you won’t be required to travel far for your next meal. The café and bar offers the most casual of settings, with loft ceilings and full-height windows setting the relaxed atmosphere. With plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, the café can accommodate a large proportion of people concurrently whilst the light bites supplement any beverage.

The restaurant is visually appealing whilst serving only the freshest, locally-grown ingredients. The service is informal but faultless and you can take in the views overlooking the sun-drenched vistas and beautiful natural surrounding that you find yourself in.

The terrace truly showcases the climate that Cyprus finds itself in and with over 300 days a year of sunshine, it is often a popular spot for guests to congregate. Take advantage of this surreal al fresco experience and sit down to a meal with fantastic views overlooking the golf course, olive groves or enjoy the peacefulness of a candlelit dinner.
