Feature Review - PING Glide

REVIEW: PING Glide Wedges

By: Adam Smith | Thu 05 Mar 2015

Having not upgraded my wedges for quite a while, the first aspect I noticed about the PING Glide wedges was the performance and feel. After a few opening shots I found I had increased confidence in a part of my game I would certainly confess is my weakest – 100 yards in.

The look on address is also impressive with a much lighter, chrome finish that other options on the market that I feel I struggle with. The stainless steel head also repels moisture to create more friction and consistency in wet conditions and in the rough, always good for the UK!

PING Glide Wedges

PING Glide and longer grips

When being taken around the PING factory and seeing first hand and the Glide’s being custom built I was dubious when I heard about the longer grips that would be used. User experience testing was taken into account especially from PING Tour pro’s like Lee Westwood - The Dylawedge grip is three quarters-of-an-inch longer than normal PING irons, has softer tapering and again on request from Westwood, has three grip down indicator’s to offer more control on ball flight when gripping down.

Custom designed from the hands down, the PING Glide really did offer me greater consistency and thanks to the three sole options, greater versatility.

The standard, thin and wide soles enable you to be custom fit for your angle of attack and different weather conditions.
I especially noticed the difference around the greens with my 58 degree thin sole Glide. The grip on the second bounce, teamed with the wet conditions on the day meant I had could throw my pitches up to the pin knowing I would get stop when I wanted it. I also saw noticeable grip, feel and control on my standard sole 52 degree on longer shots, again allowing me to attack flags that before weren’t accessible. There are 13 loft/sole options available upon fitting so you’ll be sure to get the one right for you.

A stock CFS Wedge shaft is optimised in weight, flex and balance again to offer stable feel with controlled flight.
My PING Glide wedges came fitted with a purple dot, one down on my normal red dot on my i25 irons - PING say this is because the angle of attack is always one coloured dot flatter on wedges.
In the bag

Although I’ve only had the wedges in my bag for a couple of rounds I’m looking forward to seeing improved and eventually consistent results to my wedge play. From early use, the extra confidence boost and feel around the greens and from sand has done me wonders as my mind-set is now more focused on getting up and down a lot more than before. I’ve set my scrambling and GIR targets from 100-yards in for the year and can’t wait to see the results.

All in all, if you’re in the market for new wedges, get yourself to a PING dealership and get fitted straight away. The swiftness from PING means you’ll have your Glide wedges in your bag before you know it.

PING Glide wedges retail at £105 in steel shaft and £120 for graphite.
